1 week in Hawaii

Hey guys

Going to Hawaii with our 2 kids (10 & 7)

Just on the main island this time. 1 week.

Am thinking of renting car and exploring few days on other side(s) of island, and leaving Honolulu for the last couple days before departing.

Any recommendation for accomm and activities?

Cheers

Two things that stood out for us was -
    1. Stargazing at MaunaKea- https://www.lovebigisland.com/stargazing/
    2. Volcanoes - https://www.gohawaii.com/experiences/sightseeing/Volcanoes

There are also few waterfalls that are worth visiting.

  • Main island as in Big Island or Oahu (Honolulu)?

Our family just did a Christmas in Hawaii, all adults though. I would look into Air BnB as and option for a family. We stayed up on the North Shore and then used a hire car to drive places; the traffic can be a bit heavy at times. The local Foodland kept us in provisions.

    • dependent on the time of year a number of the beaches were deemed unsafe for people to be on, the surf was really huge and the beaches were disappearing.
    • snorkling in the volcanic rock pools was really fun but make sure the kids are well covered up, rashy vests are a good idea and because many of the rocks are volcanic I would be looking at booties as well. Watch the locals and see if there is an easy way in and out of the pools that avoids most of the rocks. There were lots of fish to see.
    • There is a chocolate, coffee and soap factory near the top of the island and nearby there is a beach where you can snorkel with Turtles. It was brilliant you just suspended above them and they didn't seem concerned. They were quite close to the shore but you would need to keep hold of the kids as it is an open beach.
    • Oahu has an outlet shopping mall.
    • The Polynesian centre is a bit cheesy but the canoe ride is fun, the Tongan drumming guys are good, the 15 min film on Hawaii was spectacular, the buffet is a bit so, so and the evening show is a bit long but ends with fire dancers, who were really good. You get a 3 day pass so you could go back a couple of times if you liked.
    • Diamond head was a good walk with a lovely view. It is a bit steep and uneven and if you decide to do it go relatively early in the day to avoid the crowds. I would also park outside the reserve and walk in because they have these stupid trams that clog up the road and make it hard to get in and out. Either that or arrive and leave using the trams.

When we were there we had a couple of days when it absolutely teemed down so you might want some umbrellas. It wasn't cold but it was very wet.

The back of the island has some great views as well so just travelling around can be fun.

    • Thanks for all this info. Appreciate it

  • Take a look at the Polynesian Cultural Centre which is, IIRC, on the way to Kapulua Bay. Well worth a visit, though it is owned by the Mormon Church, so don't freak out if they throw the odd religious theme at you. Last time I was there it was FOC, though there might be a charge now.

  • Waikele shopping been there many times over the year, last time bought Sketchers for US$35, wife got a Coach handbag retail was $550 paid $150, bus return about $25

Down street behind Maca's there is an excellent bar and restaurant.

For ladies Forever 21 main drag next to Cheesecake factory, latter excellent food and service.

    • Which maccas? Can you remember where abouts roughly or the name thanks
