Windows 2-in-1 Laptop Tablet to Be Used as POS System (Will Always Be on Power)

Hi Everyone,

I need to purchase a windows based touch screen device to run our Point of Sale software at a hospitality shop. It will be used for 10 plus hours every day and will be on a stand plugged into power the whole time so battery life doesn't matter.

The main criteria are as follows:

  • Must be fast however I don't think the load would be high because it is just operating the one application
  • Must be durable and be able to last 3 years operating 10 hours a day 7 days a week
  • Easy to see the screen
  • Needs to be Windows OS

As long as the above are covered I would like to spend as little as possible hoping for sub $500.

Also if anyone has any advice on thermal printers happy for some input on that as well.

Thanks in advance

If it's for a business, I wouldn't skimp on a cheap system - what would you do if it crashed? Spend the funds (claim on your taxes) and get a proper Surface Pro, don't mess around.

I don't agree about the Surface pro, but definitely agree with recommending OP spends a decent chunk of cash on quality.

I'd also recommend getting two for full redundancy - unless you can still trade without the POS being operational.

  • I agree definitely need a quality device that is going to last. I was thinking about purchasing from a local place like Officeworks/JB Hifi with extended warranty so if it crashes I can just take it down and get a new one straight away.

Is the surface pro the only option for a quality product though? Are there any other cheaper devices that could do the job?

Also I noticed Kogan has the surface pro for $890 which is an international import https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/microsoft-surface-pro-4-128gb-m…. The obvious downside is if it needs repairs but seems a a lot cheaper than officeworks.

    • Try looking for the Surface 3's.
They've been doing the job well at my workplace - in terms of repairs, it'll be a bit harder, however it'll be cheaper if you purchase multiple for redundancy

  • if you're going low end, buy two of the same system after you've evaluated that that one system is solid
