Selling an unregistered vehicle

Hi all

Just want to ask a question about selling an unregistered vehicle.

My car is 2001 honda civic, registered in QUEENSLAND and rego until feb 2018.
Bought the car few months ago and dead on road few times due to different issues. Yesterday car overheated and I saw coolant boiling in water box, but i could still drive home after i let the car rest for more than 1 hour.

Today the car not start again, thought it was flat battery, called roadside assistance to change battery but car still wont start. I prefer to get rid the car now and not spend money to fix it.

Now I am thinking to get my car wrecked. I am in Woolgoolga NSW, the only local car wrecker said they are not interested in this vehicle.

I have someone want to get my car for free. I am happy to do so but what should i do to avoid any future responsiblity with this car?

Or can i call another car wrecker located 25km away to see if they are happy to come and tow the car away?
Can i ask my roadside assistance from my insurance to tow my car to car wrecker?

Thanks for all input:)

  • IF you’re happy to get rid of the car for free there is a charity that picks up your car for free with a tow truck and sells it at auction and proceeds go to homeless kids, all you need to worry about is taking number plate off.
They also send you a tax deductible receipt
Alternatively you could list it on eBay or something with no minimum and just be clear about its condition. An Uber driver was telling me that’s what he did with an old car, but a little more difficult if the car doesn’t start I suppose

    • Kids Under Cover is the charity I think you’re talking about…

    • Sell for free? That's not the Ozbargain way.
He can easily get someone to collect it for a small amount of cash in return.

      • I know giving things away might not be the OZB way but OP says he is happy to let the car go for free..just offering an alternative way he can get rid of it as it can be difficult to move a car that doesn't start esp when wreckers have already knocked him back, so i'm sure not sure if there will be someone who will pay cash to come and pick up an 18 year old car that doesnt start.
but hey, maybe you can make OP an offer if you're confident you can spin a profit on it

  • +1

The problem might be where you left it. If it is parked somewhere the local council will have a problem with, they may end up towing it plus sending you a fine.

Best course of action is to ring a metal recycler and see if they want it. Wreckers seldom want cars, as they already have heaps of them, but metal recyclers don’t care what it is, as they just want to scrap it for its metal value.

Another alternative is, put it on Gumtree for $500 and see if you get a bite. Make sure you state the issues with the car and that it may need to be towed. If someone offers you less, take it.

You can cash out the rego, but with only a month remaining, I doubt it would be worth much anyway…

Just let it roll of the headlands

    • YouTube it, and get paid ten thousand australian cents for the viral vid.

  • Take off plates, hand in rego, sell as-is noting some drivable issues (overheating etc). Minimal cost, get some cash, no responsibility as long as you have a signed receipt (write one up on a piece of paper and make a copy for yourself).

If you want to just get rid of it, as mentioned, plenty of ppl pick them up for free.

  • Whatever you do, make sure you fill out the correct 'notice of disposal' or cancel the rego.

  • Take the plates to TMR and get a refund for the remaining rego.

But if you're in NSW that might not be so easy. I think you could perhaps post them to QLD and authorise someone else to do it.

Probably won't get much more than $100 depending how much longer it's registered.

  • Put a bigger exhaust, bigger spoiler and some JDM stickers on it.

Now your car is 99% par with the fully sick brahs at your local kebab trailer.

    Profit.
