Pensioner Greenslip without Current Licence

I need to get my mother's car registered today so we can use it and possibly sell it next month.

I went to do this last month but it seems the RTA has suspended her licence as she needs to get an update to the allowed kms she can drive (currently 30 kms from home). Can I get a green slip in my name for her car? The reason being that she lives 2.5 hours from me and the closest Service NSW is probably only 10 mins but as she is 91 years and of failing health requiring help to get her to and from Service NSW. This is to complete a licence update form (not sure what is involved.. ) or maybe putting the green slip in my name would be much easier all round if that is allowed.

Why not just sell the car as is and discount the cost of registration off the desired selling price?

I would have thought they are separate issues.

    Renew Green Slip online
Take car for an inspection if needed (depends on age)

If no issues renew registration online - all done

    • Pink slip inspection done already.. I tried a greenslip b4 christmas in mums name (her car) and it was declined… I know now it was because of her suspended license..

Green slips are issued by insurers, not Service NSW. As chrisd262 says, getting a green slip and getting the car registered are separate issues.

  • You miss some information.

Does it need a rego checK? (over 5 years old) If you dont have this you will need to get that. Is the car with her or with you?

You may find CTP goes down if you are listed as a driver as CTP rates increase with age. I dont know at what point my relative aged 85 paid more, but this reduced when a younger driver was added to the policy.

CTP slips are separate from Rego. It maybe that she cant get the free Rego unless she has her license - the Service NSW website says

To be eligible, you'll need to hold a current pension concession card and:

have paid your CTP insurance (green slip) for either 6 or 12 months
had an eSafety inspection (pink slip), if your rego renewal says 'inspection required' or your vehicle is more than 5 years old
have no restrictions on your vehicle or driver licence.

However there shouldn't be any restriction if she pays for her rego vs getting it free. BTW if you sell in 1 month with free rego the buyer must pay extra to cover this, so if they are cluey they should ask that you reduce the price to cover this, so you may not be out of pocket by paying for this (Note you can register for 6 months if you are selling - that may save something)

I would avoid having rego in her name and you as the CTP owner - its insurance, and you dont want technical complications should you/she have an accident, we know how insurers love get out clauses.
