Cheap/Reliable Internet Provider for Home Use in Metro Melb?

So I'm moving into a new place and interested in various internet options out there.

I'm tossing up between Wireless or ADSL. NBN isn't coming in for another year and even then I would delay connection for as long as possible.

Basically I'm after a list of companies to look into that offer month to month or 12 month plans.

Not entirely sure of my usage (don't pay bills now and multi person household). I mostly use mobile but do use PC too. I don't stream or download music/tv (I do download software updates). I only browse, but this can be image heavy. I would estimate at least 20GB a month, though I figure once I hit around 20GB on wireless, ADSL may become cheaper?

TIA!

  • I think we've had about 50 of these "Which internet provider?" posts recently.

Have you tried a search in these forums?

Also, providing everyone the suburb you live in will be helpful for others to recommend providers.

    • I have searched these forums and it may be the terms I searched but aside for NBN suggestions, I couldn't find anything somewhat recent (last 12 months) that was just a compilation of the cheaper providers. The posts I found were quite specific such as asking "is telstra ok…" or were about fast speeds or high data plans.

Woah, use my brain and find something for myself? No way!

  • Cheap/Reliable/fast, choose two.

    • I didn't choose two. I asked for cheap and reliable. No mention of me wanting fast.

Whoosh…. the sound of that going over your head.

Yes, you did choose two, you chose cheap and reliable, so to get cheap and reliable, you don't don't get FAST.

        • Fast does not equal reliable.

Reliable is that the speed I have paid for is consistent, rather than fluctuating.

Reliable is a provider where if there is an issue they will resolve it promptly when I bring it to their attention.

I've also had previous ISPs where the service cut out randomly. This was not reliable.

        • @jjjaar: WHOOOSH!!!!!!!!! (again).

Yeah, lets move on, you don't understand.

I've also had previous ISPs where the service cut out randomly. This was not reliable.

          Was it fast and cheap?

As I said, fast/reliable/cheap. Choose two.

  • If you’re after ADSL then your speed is more dependent on your location than your internet provider. Quality and distance of the phone line from the exchange are the biggest determinants of speed. Check out whirlpool - they are a bit more focused on internet providers than ozbargain.

    • Will do, thanks!

Cheap and reliable don't always go together.

Actually, reliability (and speeds) with ADSL is mostly down to luck — since if you live in an area where the exchange is far away, you'll have to live with crappy ADSL2 sync speeds and if your wiring is dodgy you'll also have terrible speeds and frequent dropouts.

Double whammy if it's a combination of the two. Usually when the NBN comes, it's usually a good thing because for most people it means the end of crappy ADSL2 internet, but for some it may actually be a downgrade (depending again on connection issues because of crappy Node-based technology)

There are tonnes of ADSL2 providers out there, but generally speaking they all cost roughly the same (ranging from $50 to $60-70 a month for either 500GB or Unlimited). The one thing you SHOULDN'T do is to lock yourself into a contract, as contracts are generally just a silly thing nowadays and the only person it benefits is the service provider.

Basically I'm after a list of companies to look into that offer month to month or 12 month plans.

Use WhistleOut website. Search for ADSL2 plans with a set price. Try to filter out contracts — go with month-by-month.

    • Thank you very much for your reply. Avoiding contracts is ideal as I hate being locked in.

Suggest you kiss goodbye forever any further internet/phone services supplied over the derelict copper pair system.
If you have good mobile reception, consider instead a home broadband service via sim data only plan, for example:

    Works well for me.
