Spy Camera for Car Vandalism

Hi,

My cars have been under some kind of vandalism past few weeks. These cars are parked in the basement of my unit that is secured with automated gate. In the first 2 weeks, there was some kind of white sticky fluid sprayed on the driver side wind screen. I had to use Spirit to remove it by scrubbing it for around 30-40 mins. This happend many a times in 2 weeks. And then in 3rd week, I see that one of the tyre inflation valve has been damaged. Interestingly these things happening only to my car. The basement doesn't have any security cams fixed. I have reported this to my agent who will be escalating the matter to Strata, but I am sure nothing much will be done by them. I want to catch these goons and report it to police. What are the ways I can do it?

I am planning to buy a Spy cam from ebay (seller from china), but not sure how much I can rely on these products. I was also thinking of Dash Cam with motion detection hard wired to the car battery. I am bit apprehensive about life of the battery.

What do you guys think? Any other solution some one can suggest?

    I would buy a hunting/trail camera and strap it to driver seat battery should not be a problem - only real issue would be the nightvision might not work behind a window or your vandals see it and break your window to get the camera .

    Get a dash cam with parking mode and hardwire it. The higher end models of blackvue and blacksys have voltage cut off settings that automatically cuts power to the dashcam if your battery voltage drops below a set threshold. That way you don't have to worry about coming back to a flat battery

        True, it is a bit expensive. But they are solid kits for the money and worth it if your car is.

        Alternatively, a cheap dash cam with a power bank will work if OP is after a temporary solution

    what kinda car do you have? do you have alot of accessories & a good stereo?

    can you wifi down to the car from your apartment? if yes then maybe netgear arlo? the motion sensor will alert you so you can confront whoever it is!

    Do you want it just to stop or do you want to catch them?

    If you want it simply to stop, write a note to all occupants asking them to support your request to strata for cameras in the park because of vandalism.

    I have had similar concerns in the past and tried to find ways to get camera/etc down there but underground, it’s highly unlikely you will be able to get wifi or any cellular signal (and hence portable modems/etc aren’t going to help). At least in your case since the issue is just vandalism (as opposed to someone stealing your car outright), maybe a dash cam might be the best option provided there’s enough lighting for it to work and the quality of the footage is decent.

    I personally have a Blackvue DR650S with a power magic pro - basically when the car is parked, it will record if it detects motion/movement or a bump to the car (sensitivity can be adjusted). The power magic pro is the hardwiring kit which means it can draw power even when the car is parked (without it, it would turn off with the car when using a cig lighter power socket). I got this setup professionally installed too so it looks subtle/flush and also gives me peace of mind when driving too - but if you are only interested in catching this vandal then maybe you can go for a cheaper and less permanent installation.

    If the apartment complex is built from concrete slabs, then it's possible that the white stuff on your windscreen could be due to a water leak above or near your car, I'd probably eliminate that possibility before I spent any money on a dash cam.

    If it turns out there is a leak, then your agent needs to arrange with the BC to get it fixed.
