EDIT: I recommend NOT buying this CPU, or any other Intel CPU until the performance impact of the new kernel bug fixes are known. https://www.theregister.co.uk/2018/01/02/intel_cpu_design_fl…

Not bad! I got it for $476 AUD with PUNCH from pacific_elements on eBay (not sure if they have any more stock)
I had some problems with the heat sink on my last build.
So now I prefer to buy prebuilt machines.More info, please! Think about doing my first build. Was the heat sink problem due to the amount of/application of thermal paste? Interested to hear about any pitfalls that part of the build.
(Sorry in advance if I am veering too far OT.)Just a tiny drop is enough
Small Pea size is preferred, too little hinders thermal performance. Avoid massive amounts but generally doesn't impact thermal performance (in contrast to too little).
Real world testing of application of conducted by linusmediagroup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2MEAnZ3swQ
Yes had something to do with the paste. Wasn’t even I think.
Had too much. Then had too little.
Had to clean and reapply a couple of times before I got it right.as f38r1 notes, you just need to use a tiny amount of paste. Also, need to be gentle when putting everything together - pushing down hard on the heat sink can in turn put a lot of pressure on the motherboard which can cause it to bend and introduce all sorts of issues. So basically, if you're not too cave-person like it should be fine. On the other hand, many places will assemble a pc for you for a nominal amount (eg $50 or so) in which case it might be worthwhile letting them do it as it then also means they can't blame you for putting things together incorrectly…..
Only other thing is try to be tidy - keep cables together and bundled away to improve airflow. More air = less heat = less noise (fans can run slower) and more reliable.
Congngo is probably doing it wrong. Just get some advice over the forums before you build it and you wont have any issues.
Let me help you and anyone else unsure of how to apply thermal paste: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hNgFNH7zhQ
Thanks! That vid makes me far more confident to give it a whirl.
BTW: thanks also to congngo for being honest and also offering a suggestion. No need to hate on him/her folks…. it's New Year's day. Have a great OzB 2018 everyone!
Amazon conversion is showing $504 not $485 AUD
pay in USD not in AUS
Don't use Amazon conversion. Pay in USD and use your 28 degrees/Citibank card for best rates and no fees.
Or ING now I believe
Probably a stupid question but when I click on it it says doesn't ship to Australia (though it has a shipping price).
Most of the time it means you are trying to buy from 3rd party (non Amazon) seller.
In this case you have to click "available from" link and select Amazon from the list.Weird it now says it does. I don't know what happened there.
Great timing, I recently bought this cpu from Amazon AU from a 3rd party seller, but they ended up cancelling the order a few days later for some reason.
This is much cheaper so I'm happy :DAlso need to upgrade RAM and MoBo.
What do guys think the best bang for buck RAM is these days? (I'll probably go with 2x 8GB)RAM are still pretty pricey.
I think you’ll have to get ddr4 ram with the new z370 mobo.
Yeah that's right. Just wondering more about which Brand/Speed to go for. eg. G.Skill Ripjaws V 3200Mhz?
AMD
not going to lie, I mildly regret my i5-8400 purchase given that I could've gotten a Ryzen 1700 at the same platform price.
Nah, doesn't really matter at the end of the day. You've still got yourself a great processor and the difference would be negligible most of the time.
Well if you mainly play games with your PC then the i5 8400 still beats the Ryzen chips, but if you do productivity or content creation work that can take advantage of the extra cores and threads then yeah, the 1700 would have have been the better deal at the same price.
Personally I think the 8700K to be the best 'all purpose' CPU as it combines both high IPC and clockspeeds (useful for gaming) and has enough threads for highly multithreaded apps. Sometimes it even beats Ryzen 7s in highly threaded software which is pretty impressive considering the 2 core deficit.
It's been overpriced due to lack of supply since launch though, it's good to see finally it's selling at the MSRP, albeit from overseas.
Sorry how are you getting such a good conversion rate?
My CBA travelcard is showing the exchange rate as 0.745
Shipping on Amazon is 384.70 US
which then means its costing: 516 AUD
How are you getting 485 AUD is the citibank card that much better on rates?Cheers
I almost want to neg you for using THE WORST financial product ever. I won't tough, because I had the same thing years ago.
Cash that shout out and close the account. Those travel cards, particularly the CBA one, have a terrible conversion rate. You're effectively paying a fee of between 6 and 10 percent. What's worse is that card doesn't even offer you and chargeback protection or allow you to earn points.
If you don't want a credit card get something like the Macquarie Bank platinum account, which gives you the MasterCard rate, with no conversion fee.
Or even just get the ING Orange Everyday account and pay the 2.5% international transaction fee of 2.5%. You should have an ING account anyway if you're an OzBargainer
If you're not already with ing, use a referral link from OzBargain to get $25 you $100 free cash. PM me if you want me to help you get $100 for free. Finally, if you want to make the purchase now, you might as well just use your travel card if you have the USD on it, since that lossy conversion is already done. If not, just use a random bank card like your MasterCard debit and pay the 3+% fees.
Edit: don't feel bad though, cba peddled that ripoff product to me when I was younger and I fell for it too lol. "You can lock in a rate, no fees!"
As others have said, citibank is good too, and 28 degrees MasterCard if you want a credit card.
I recommend Macquarie because I use them for international purchases and they've been great. And you should be with ing for decent/low requiring savings interest, the referral credit and fee free atms (including pubs) and $2.50 international atm fees with the VISA conversion rate.Haha im glad you didn't. The main card i use for purchases is the amex plat edge card. I was heading to the states and didn't bother getting a travel card till last minute (still in the states actually). Didn't want to pay the additional international transaction fees.
However, didn't realise it was that bad at exchange rates. The assistant when picking it up told me it was the latest exchange rate at that time.
Just checking now but, citibank sells at 0.77, cba at 0.75. Putting it at a $14 discrepancy ie $500AUD to $514AUD.
Still not anywhere close to 485. That's the confusion piece i guess as to how the OP can get that price.
Funny thing is I'm in newyork with 2day prime shipping to door and it costs an additional 30US at checkout vs going to australia (taxes!)….even though I'm right here….aaahhh.
Thanks for the advice on ING though, will look into it when i get back.
I will say though I'd highly recommend putting your money into an offset account for your mortgage over a high interest savings account any day. You would save a lot more and not get taxed on your interest earnings for the year.My bad, I didn't properly do a currency conversion, I just typed in "380 USD to AUD" in Google.
Bear in mind This cpu needs a good heat sink
Good deal, should see a few AMD users jump back on the INTEL bandwagon
Might be better to wait until they fix the Kernel bug!

Nice find. Around $65 cheaper then msy.
