Hi everyone, I hope I'm in the right spot.
I don't have a currency exchange credit card fee free card that I've seen mentioned, I'm just wondering what the best process of transferring AUD to USD is (for travel to South America - PerĂº) in January. This is my first time overseas and would like to save money on the atrocious exchange fees I've heard of.
Thank-you in advance!

Do you find their exchange rate is within a percent of the so called ?standard exchange rate?
Not sure if you have enough time, but the Citibank debit MasterCard is free and has competitive exchange rates.
Great, I'll look into it. Thanks!
Buy large denomination US$ notes ($50 or $100) here - you will lose about 3%-4% on the conversion from AUD. BUT, you will get a very healthy conversion from USD to the local currency. There is a good black market for large denomination banknotes in most countries.
In fact, on a recent visit to an Asian country I converted $A100 notes into US$20 notes at better than the interbank mid rate!Do you of anyone with firsthand, recent experience in Peru specifically? To my knowledge the Peruvian black market rate was never as impressive as it was in Argentina (when I was there), or more recently, Venuzuela. I'd rather pull out money as I need it at a slight loss than carry over a $1000 US Dollars pre-converted and strapped to my body for only a slight gain.
ATMs in Peru often charge fees so I would probably get the ING Debit card (using Citibank as a backup) and meet ING's conditions to receive a rebate for an international ATM fee (within 5 days).
I always use Citibank plus - debit/atm card, and research ATM's in advance.
No knowledge of South America, but often poorer countries have better rates than in Aust. for cash - Lower overheads/narrower margins for a start. I would google research the cities that you are visiting and best places to exchange.
Amex has a currency conversion that I use. You request his much you want, deposit the money and then you pick it up from Australia Post
