What would be a good kayak to buy for a beginner, and is it possible to buy a trailer to tow a kayak behind a bicycle? If so where would one get it from?
I live only about a five minute cycle from a lake and would love to go for a paddle on the weekends

I thinking about doing this once but always wondered how safe the bike and trailer would be when out on the water.
A standard kayak trolley and some way to attach it to your bike? Some sort of alloy bar and a hitch to the seatpost, similar to one of those half wheelers.
Googling shows me there's a couple of commercial ones but the majority are DIY jobs. Depending on the size/model of kayak, you might be able repurpose a kiddie or cargo trailer for the trailer-hitch, adding a normal kayak trolley on the back.
EDIT: Thule do a replacement conversion kit that might help with the trailer-hitch part.

There are many types of kayak depending on your particular needs but a general advice for all is to get it 2nd hand - you won't be as precious about scratches and lose half its value when you do get the first big one.

I have one of these, but not for kayak.
I'd have to buy the extension arm if I bought one.
Being in WA, I'm too worried about being shark burly to consider it.
I went to Freo recently with my sister visiting from interstate.
The fish n chip restaurant we went into for lunch had two shark munched kayaks hanging from the ceiling.
Oh and the trailers a great unit.
I've got the large which has 20' (406) size wheels.
I bought mine from here about 6 or 7 years ago when they were around half that price, likely on a special.

Make one, it surely wouldnt be that hard. Skateboard bearings, rubber wheels, marine grade ply etc.
