Y2016 Altima Ti-S 3.5l Engine - CVT - 9500km - $28.9k - Should I Buy It

Hi all,

I’m new to this forum. Have been looking for a car with best seat for my lower back and that’s why this car became one option.

Currently driving VE Golf Y15 comfortline for more than 2 Years with only 30km and need to trade in.

Total budget under 35K with trade-in price considered.

This car has been stopped from import by Nissan so y16 model is the most recent model I can get. Plus Y16 model has one big change in the design - 3yr cycle after first launch. That NASA designed zero-gravity seat really attracts me.

Need ur opinion if it’s a good sedan to buy and if it’s worth it at that price? If not, what else car (sedan or SUV) would u recommend?

Thanks!

    $30k is a lot for a car.

You could find an equally comfortable and reliable car for $5k-10k.

    • Good luck finding a my16 corolla for $5000 to $10000.

      • Maybe there are other types of cars, apart from a Corolla.

    • You can find a car for $5-10k, but it's going to be 5-10 years old and it's not going to be equally comfortable to a top spec, recent model mid-size sedan.
Reliability is unlikely to be as good either. The only potentially dodgy component in the Nissan is the CVT, but even them I think they've sorted out over the past few years.

      • I agree. CVT with 3.5L engine looks really doggy. I will have a test drive this weekend to find out.

        • CVT is the most efficient drivetrain, but being (relatively) new tech, there have been teething issues with some Nissan models.
Sounds and feels a bit strange if it's programmed to do what it's supposed to - keep engine revs at the optimum for Power versus the road speed, but from a purely Engineering perspective, the other options are inefficient junk.

        • @scubacoles:

Love CVT - no issues with Nissan CVTs from my experience. I've had a 2006 J31 Maxima, 2006 Z50 Murano, 2010 J32 Maxima and 2010 Z51 Murano and never had any issues with CVT.

OP - Do it! I'd love to get an Altima Ti-S.

        • Nissan CVT has very bad reviews for its problems. I always buy Japanese cars for their simplicity to maintain but I'll avoid Nissan CVT.

        • @sasukewa:
Pretty sure they've resolved the issues.. The originals were the ones with problems.

        • @sasukewa:

As scubacoles has confirmed below, you are thinking of the VERY early Nissan XTROID CVTs which failed very often. Lots of the upper spec 3.5L V35 Skylines around with broken CVTs although I can't help but thinking a lot of issues emerged from people/workshops using the wrong CVT fluid in them. The CVT fluid to suit these early Nissan CVTs still costs about $1000 for a full fill.

  • When I was last looking around a few years back, the Altima seemed to be a bit of a bargain, but out of my price bracket at the time.
Semi unique, cause they just never took off here, with all the reliability of a big Japanese Brand. The Motoring Journo's always swoon over that 3.5 V6 too.

SUV's are the obvious alternative if getting in-out of a lower vehicle is a problem for your back.

    • The CVT puts people off I think.. At least the ones I drove in the US had properly variable ratios, while most of the "CVT"s I drive here have fixed gear ratios.. What's the point of that? lol

The point is that people "feel" like a revving engine is "faster" and "normal".
Agree that it's a stupid hack.. surely should at least be an option to switch it to proper "infinite" ratio?

        • Indeed.

    • I am also looking for one SUV. Did test drive some cheap option like Havel H6 and the poor build stopped me from chasing further. Any other SUV alternatives with comfortable seats?

  • Its hard to consider the Altima a bargain when you can get a 2016 Infiniti Q50 for a few thousand more, which is leaps and bounds better to drive and more comfortable than the Altima.

    NASA designed zero-gravity seat…

Smacks of marketing bullshit to me.

“Feather touch steering wheel, developed by Tontine…”

  • At present only Nissan has the zero gravity seats. I can't find other manufacturers. Just avoid the CVT models.

  • got a subaru liberty and they have AWD and other tech gadgets for safety which others did not have. less than $30 new.
