Reputable Breeders for Green Cheek Conure, Sydney:

Purchasing a conure which is obviously implied by the title.

Have already performed searches through Gumtree and petlinks. Now I am after first hand experience in buying green cheeks in Sydney.

If anyone can share their experiences or recommendations for purchasing birds in Sydney that would be appreciated.

Please feel free to ask any follow up questions subject to this thread.

Thanks.

First question - wtf is a green cheek conure?

OP should make their request for help clearer, rather than rely on everyone having to research the subject individually, to determine whether they are able to offer help. Seems to be pretty common these days, just because you know what you are talking about, you shouldn't assume everyone else does. Re-read the post and put yourself in an ordinary person's shoes. It isn't obvious to most.

    • An escape artist in my case. Damn bird.

First question - wtf is a green cheek conure?

A green cheek conure is a conure with green cheeks.

  • Bird in a cage = hell.
However if you are giving it the run of the house then hopefully it will live a relatively happy life.

  • Don't go to David Vella the vet, he sold me like $1000 worth of supplements and stuff for my Eclectus and I don't think I opened even half of them (her diet of mainly passionfruit, kiwi and apple was perfectly good enough!). Get toys from the Parrot Rescue Centre, they're great quality and the proceeds go to a good cause. While you're at it check them out and see if they have any green cheeks. If you adopt from them they'll also give you loads of advice - so you can ask your questions re: cage etc of them.

Don't do it. You are supporting an institution that makes ornaments and playthings of sentient beings that belong to themselves and should be free to roam as they will.

If you have a desire to directly help birds then seek rescues that need permanent or temporary homes. Google "bird rescue Sydney" for options.

    • "Don't do it."

Explain how not buying a bird
will decrease the supply and demand noticeable in the pet trade industry.

Surely it is better that birds are looked after people that truly cares?

Furthermore, how do you know birds do not like being domesticed? Every time I have asked them about this question they been rather tight lipped.

      "rescues that need permanent"

That is a good idea provided that they have birds that need rehousing.

      • Do you also assume chickens don't mind being confined and then slaughtered because they're "tight lipped" about that?

        • I've never heard them complain.

        • @Scab: I'd suggest that's more an issue with your ability to discern and empathise rather than their ability to speak English.

          @thevofa:

Serves the chickens right for being so tasty, it's their fault.

        • +1

chickens as we know them wouldn't exist if they weren't useful for eggs or meat.

        • @blaircam: true, they'd be free roaming species found in relatively small numbers in their own environs - like all other free roaming animals. You make it sound that being bred to be exploited in large numbers is a more desirable outcome for them? I wonder if you'd think the same for your own species? Do you use birth control?

      • As you just said.. supply and demand.

If nobody buys the birds then nobody will breed them and they will not spend a life confined in a cage. For every good owner there are probably 2 or 3 poor owners.

You can use the same argument with anything. Elephants wouldn't be slaughtered if nobody purchased ivory. Equally, saying that you are only buying 1 bird or 1 piece of ivory and it won't make a difference is simply untrue :)

You could use the same argument with anything, even plastic bags. We all have to try harder :)

Don't you see the irony of telling another sentient being what to do and how to live their own life, so that it is in line with your own politics? The OP should be free to decide and roam as they please and pursue their own interests without you hampering them with your value judgements. If they want to care for and provide for an animal, that is their decision, it is hardly torture.

      • Anyone is free to do anything so long they are not imposing on another. Capturing or bringing a sentient being into existence to be perpetually dependent on yourself is the height of imposition on that being.

BTW, upvoting comments that mock the very lives of birds with reference to their taste hardly lends your position on matters in this thread any notion of sensibility.

Yet you can't see you are imposing your values on others. If you practice what you preach, they they are free to do what ever they like.

Having a kid with a disability would also tick all the boxes for being brought into existence to be perpetually dependent on another. I guess we just shouldn't allow that either because it offends your values.

        • @endotherm:

Even though I am merely trying to persuade via comments on a forum rather than paying money for and otherwise actualising real imposition / harm I suspect you will not be moved on this point. Maybe you would do better raising these issues with those who argue against slavery or forced assimilation - I'm sure many racists will think their values are unfairly challenged.

Having a perpetually dependant kid is not by design or intent - that would be equally as cruel as subjecting any other sentient being to the same fate. Caring perpetually for an extant child with ongoing needs would be honorable, again equally as honorable as caring for a rescue of any species. Perhaps consider and develop your own retorts properly.

      • You can argue this with anything.
I haven't told the OP not to do this.

        Everybody has a different boundary.

You can legally care for tigers etc in the USA, would you be happy with that in a cage? If not, then by your own logic you shouldn't say anything.

I will be truly amazed if you have never ever made a comment to another person based on your values. (technically you are doing this right now by telling me your values on the matter).
