PlayStation Plus Membership Required - Any Way to Get It Cheaper?

Son got a PS4 for Xmas to play Overwatch with friends
Took f.o.r.e.v.e.r. to initialise , update, download game patches etc
Finally ready tonight and … he cant play because

  1. we told the truth that he is 12 so Sony/Blizzard decided he is age restricted - total BS
  2. Overwatch is Multi-player turns out you need a Playstation Plus sub to play AT ALL
Poor little guy still hasn't had a crack at it!

So advice needed please

  1. i have made him a new account and loaded to PS4
just added 10 years to his age - sigh
  2. I need to buy the PS+ sub and activate on the PS4 and then his is good to go right?

Sub is AU$80 p.a. or cheaper shorter options
Anyway to get that cheaper - VPN to another country for purchase or something?
I see lots of dodgy 'trial' codes on eBay for 14 days for $0.99US but surelyt his is more hassle than it's worth
Any insights or suggestions much appreciated
Thanks

Do not purchase trial codes, you can only use one trial per account and there is a free trial of 14 days on the PS Store that you can use in the meantime for your son to play online.

Several methods to purchase cheaper membership but most of the significantly cheaper ones are reliant on timing:
    1) Sony discounts through lower price or bonus months (rare-ish)
    2) Discounted PSN cards, which you then use the credit to buy subscription (rare-ish)
    3) Use discounted gift cards (e.g. 5% off Woolworths cards) and use that to buy subscription from physical store

Usually once or twice a year sony offer 25% off subs (yearly only I think), that's going to be the easiest way, maybe sign up for the 3 monthly renewing sub until the next 25% off sale.

Other than that yes you can use other countries psn accounts, but there can be compatibility issues with DLC and such (i.e if you buy the aus disk version of Call of duty, the DLC from the us playstation store won't work with it). With the way the aussie dollar is these days I don't even think it's worth the hassle anyway.

TLDR: I recommend signing up for 3 month subs till next 25% off sale.

Be sure to remember or write down the adjusted DOB. In the event you need support, they would most likely ask for DOB as part of the verification. If you forget this, you may lose the account which would be even more hassle down the track if purchases/subscriptions have been made on the account!

As for cheap PS+ subs, keep an eye on OzBargain as 25% sales do happen and you can stack subscriptions

I was in this situation a couple of weeks ago and bought a PSN prepaid card from play-asia for the USA region. This lets you use USA PSN which means you'll get your games cheaper. You can use an additional non PS+ PSN account for the AUS region for DLC if you ever need it.

buy indonesia PS Plus, AUD $35 for 12 months, mostly same games as NA/Europe(Australia).

The PS store just had another 25% off PS+ over Christmas/boxing day, you may have just missed it.

First thing is to activate the 14 day free trial.

Next, walk into a department store which has a lacklustre games department(eg Target), you should still be able to find 1 yr PS+ cards at the old price of $69. This will stack on top of the 14 day trial.
Not a huge saving, but better than nothing. and saves stuffing around with getting access to foreign PSN accounts.

    • Damn - missed that sale
Will give the chain stores a go for a cheaper card
If i fluke at Woollies i can use 5% off Wish card too

I’m in the exact same boat as you lol, brother got a PS4, got overwatch so I had to make him a brand new account with faked date of birth. Wanted to share my PS+ with him now it’s too much hassle.

Some stores still sell the old 12m membership for $69.95 (price was increased to $79.95) stores that still sell these old ones are 7-11, Coles and maybe target. Maybe buy 2/3 and stack the memberships as well. Save a few $$$

    • you can easily share your ps plus with your brother by signing in with your account and set it as primary ps4. Your brother will get to enjoy your games and ps plus subscription, themes etc as long as you dont set it as primary on your ps4 too.

      • Was going to do that, and also share some of my digital downloads with him but he doesn’t want to :(

        • he does not have to play on your account though, he can create his own account and still enjoy the benefits from your account. be smart about this.

@yummycoot: yeah I understand that part, I asked him to put my account on his PS4 but he wouldn’t let me lol … guess I’ll have to get a 12mth membership for him

        • @F4ncy2: sorry to say this but your brother sounds very frustrating to deal with. i would rather not buy another 12 months just for him.

@yummycoot: that’s ok anyways because I don’t pay for my PS+ membership anyways 😝 he can get it from his mother :)

    • I have a Coles, Woolies and Target - will give it a go

Try Coles. They’ll probably have the $69.95 membership
