Stores Labelling Prices as "Sale" Prices When Just Regular Price

I've been in the market for a new TV for the past few months and have been watching the prices at a few retail outlets like a hawk… thought I'd make a move today being the "boxing day" sales…. to my disappointment a lot of prices were actually the same as usual but marked as reduced or on sale…

Sure there is a lot of bargains out there and I'm not saying all stores do this, but it got my thinking…. how rampant is this practice throughout the retail industry as there would be a lot of mums and dads who don't know any better and trust that a "on special" or reduced sign means they're actually getting a good deal.

The definition of "reduced" or "sale" is pretty much when it's being sold for less than the RRP.

Keep that definition in mind and you'll never be disappointed at any "sale"! :p

The reference to RRP is incorrect. Retailers need to have the item on sale for 4 weeks (reasonable time) prior to the price reduction to make this claim. That's the ruling from the ACCC.

Plenty of large retailers have been burned in the past making these false reductions.

Smaller mum and dad operations can get away due to lack of policing.

  • There are large numbers of people who are losing more money than ever before whilst suffering the delusion that they're being given a great deal by business. Some of them even believe they're getting one over on the merchant.
