How to Move Old PS4 HDD into a New PS4 Pro (as External)

First off this is very confusing and I have looked literally everywhere to find an answer to this but I can't.

I currently have a 2TB HDD (internal) in my old PS4 (PS4-1) . I want to use the 2TB HDD into my new PS4 Pro (PS4-2) as an external HDD. I have over 1TB of data in the 2TB drive so I cannot do a system transfer - because in the PS4 Pro theres a 1TB Internal drive, and it won't allow me to transfer to a spare 2TB external drive.

So I took the 2TB HDD out of PS4-1 and put it into PS4-2 via usb, but the data wouldn't show up from my 2TB HDD. It only asked me to format the drive but I didn't want to.

So let me make this clear - I would like to use my 2TB HDD with all my saved games from PS4-1, as an external for PS4-2. Very confusing process.

    borrow another 2tb drive?

    • thats what I was thinking - replacing the PS4 Pro drive with a 2TB one and transfer old data into new one. but then I am just wasting money on another drive :(

  • I really think I stuffed up my new PS4 Pro now. I've been up for 2 1/2 hours trying to figure this bloody thing out!! I keep getting error code CE-30028-3 when I'm doing a system transfer and it then the whole console re initialises itself. I am so disappointed now

EDIT - I realised I had to have 50GB of free space but I only had 48GB. I'm now transferring game data and downloaded games onto my internal 1TB on my PS4 Pro, I'm going to then wipe my 2Tb drive and download the other games externally on it.

  • its not very confusing process if you think about it.

Connect empty drive > move games from internal to external > connect the 1st external > move games to internal > connect the new external > move games to external. Rinse repeat

    or

take out the ps4-1's hdd and put it in a case then connect as external on ps4 pro. Then use another hdd or the one that came with PS4-1 in PS4-1

I think I know what to do now. Move all games transferred from PS4-1 into an empty drive on PS4-2. That way all the games and data will be backed up. Connect the drive from PS4-1 into PS-2, transfer games from spare HDD into previous HDD, (I'm not sure if the PS4 will take 2 HDD? and then transfer games over from spare 2tb - previous 2tb that was in my old ps4)

Or my other option is, go onto my laptop, wipe PS4-1's drive, connect spare/backup 2tb drive (that I've transferred all data and games onto) and copy everything from spare 2tb drive to old PS4-1's drive.
transferring 2 lots of games takes 8 hours total, then copying them takes 4 hours. Lengthy process and I wish Sony would've made this easier

stuff what I said, this is so confusing and it isn't as easy as putting the 2tb drive straight up externally into the ps4 pro.

what I'm doing now is only choosing the games I play the most which I want downloaded, and the most important, getting the saved game DATA.

so what I'm doing is using a spare 1TB drive, backing up the games and saved data etc into the 1tb drive. once that has backed up onto the drive (963GB takes 6 hours) I'm going to fill up the internal 1TB drive onto the PS4 pro and restore the stuff that I play. But the most important stuff I need is the game data - (because I don't mind re-downloading the games I don't play much) I'm then going to completely wipe the 2tb, put it back into the caddy, format it on my new ps4 pro and download my disc games onto that making a total of 3tb (1tb internal +2tb external)

Then ill put my old 500gb hdd into my old ps4 and sell it. f***ng confusing process, wasted about 15 hours and staying up all night trying to figure this out.

for those who are upgrading a PS4 2tb, and don't want to waste money on another 2tb drive to put into your ps4, do this. bloody hard but it will be worth it

please ignore the other comments of what I have said I finally figured this out

Ok this is an update (I feel like I’m talking to myself lol but this is to help others) over 24+ hours spent trying to do this I’ve finally bloody figured this confusing rubbish out. There is only 1 way to do this. You require a lan connection through both PS4’s.

Step 1 - transfer data over LAN from old PS4 - new PS4 (make sure to keep 50GB free, otherwise your new PS4 will initialise itself) chose under 1TB of games that you play, but the most important thing is to keep the saved game data.

Step 2 - After you’ve chose your games, transferring under 1TB - from old PS4 - new internal 1TB drive on PS4. MAKE SURE to have AT LEAST 50GB ( I left 100GB free because I didn’t want mine to re initialise itself) of FREE space when you are transferring - it will tell you space left on your internal when you are doing a system transfer.

Step 3 - transferring under just 1TB of games via LAN and a 20mbps + internet speed is (taking me) took me 4-5 hours to do.

Step 4 - Once this is complete, put the old 2TB drive from old PS4 into new one as external, format it as extended storage. Download all games onto that. Don’t worry, all your games will be saved because we transferred the system saved game data.

If anyone is doing this I hope it helped so much, I’ve been figuring this out for ages now and I finally have.

I also rang PlayStation customer support, they are hopeless. And don’t try backup your data onto another drive, waste of time and not worth it.

If you want to do this by using money just buy another 2tb drive and download the system settings via sony’s Site and put it in internally and transfer, but I don’t want to waste $100 on a new drive.
