Tips on Learning to Fly

Hi,

I always wanted to learn to fly,

I was think of getting my RTL (Recreational Pilot Licence) in Melbourne

I just unsure of the cost (I know it is about 20,000) and time commitment,

Any tips of how fit in it while working full-time and reducing cost?

Any warnings?

Thanks,

Instead of paying, you get paid to learn flying.

While studying at ADFA you will receive:

    Year 1: $42,333 per year

    Year 2 $48,122 per year

    Year 3: $53,911 per year

    Year 4: $59,700 per year

$72,563 per year plus superannuation will be your starting salary package on graduation from ADFA.

Salaries increase with rank, years of service and additional skills and qualifications gained.

    • Wow you have to serve for 14 years from the look of it

I earn more than that now

ADFA is hard to get into at the best of times, air force doubly so. And if you're not young, super fit and healthy, you can forget about it

From my experience and others, I would say that to get most out of flying try to do it as frequently as possible. Just like driving a car the more lesson and as frequent as possible the quicker and more knowledge uptake rather than spreading it out and wasting time and money as it will take longer and you will forget what you have learned. If possible do it over the weekends if you can afford to. Not only you will achieve your goal sooner but it will save you money in the long run as your knowledge is still fresh and not needing to repeat lessons. It was expensive back then and probably is a lot now, so I guess you cant avoid the cost, I cant think of any other ways to reduce cost beside already owning your airplane. 😀 Aviation is a fantastic interest to get into, very expensive though however worth it in the end. I love it when I was flying, unfortunately I didnt follow it through to becoming an airline pilot but was still good to have a PPL. Good luck to you whatever you chose and I'm sure you will enjoy flying, most of us dont get a chance to do it.

    • Thanks for the advice,

Can I ask how often do fly with your PPL?

      Feel free not to answer,

      Thanks,

  • I knew someone that learnt to fly buy first learning to fly an ultralight, as that was the cheapest way to learn to fly. Then she gradually worked her way up to bigger planes. She said it was the cheapest way to do it.

    • It's the only way lol.
You think they're gonna let anyone fly a jumbo jet? Different classes have different requirements, and its usually the larger the more hours needed.

Anyways, tip number 1 cut your hair short

    Just believe in yourself

  • If all goes well it should be able to come in under the 20k, have you done any flying before? If not I'd suggest gliding, week long course will get you solo for around 2.5 to 4k depending on hours you need, plus its an incredible solid base for all type of flying.

Plus, oz bargain style, once you are solo the hourly hire rate for a glider in my local club is under $50. And the hours should be taken into account in your ongoing powered training.

    Cheers

A similar option might be gliding. Having done both, I have to admit I loved gliding way more than powered flight. Its also cheaper too.
There should be a few clubs around any major city that you could go through and try it out.
Also owning a glider is much more achievable than purchasing a light aircraft.

My brother got RTL, then leased a prop plane and took on regional work installing cabinets. (the original FiFO worker/pilot) So he was earning $ and flying hours at the same time.
Did a stint flying tourists from Gold Coast to Lady Elliot Island return each day. LSS: he now flies prop planes for Rex Air.
He's not a jet pilot - but he's not interested in flying the big boys toys. Quite an amazing career transitional pathway.

Free Udemy course. I've already learnt how to skydive for free!

Best thing to keep down the cost is to buy the full 12 hour pack instead of hourly or 3 hourly. That is if you want to fly something like a Cessna 152 or 172. The full 12 hour pack gets you ready to do your first solo flight (everyone learns different so may need more). So just under 5k this includes everything you need to pay.

It's so much fun. Enjoy yourself.

  • Take synthetic drugs, jump off an apartment balcony on the upper north shore and you too can ‘fly’.

Couple of cans of redbull should do the trick!

  • Start from the ground first!
