Was reading this article https://mobile.nytimes.com/2017/12/15/opinion/sunday/shoppin… and thought of the ozbargain crew…
What would it feel like for you not to shop for anything outside the essentials?
My immediate impression is how much I'd feel left out…. Not out of other people's lives, but of enhancing mine…
Which is a little worrying. looks at Sony nc headphones again
A Year without Buying/shopping?

That's not how you spell "Eneloops".
Eneloops are essentials to OzBargainers.
Consequently at this time of year you anticipate generous helpings of
That and making sure all Christmas gifts for parents are bought using discounted gift cards while asking siblings to pitch in their share at full retail price.
Also here is an Australian person that did this way before the above article: https://open.abc.net.au/explore/89732
This forum post makes me feel dirty, it's like asking us to cheat on ozbargain.
Hmmm… There was that fancy toilet seat a week or two ago… That might help with the dirty feelings 😂
Yes but what if something is a bargain
Buy it and start another year.
I tried to. That was my last years resolution. Good for 6 months. Then I succumbed.
It will again be my 2018 resolution. Along with keeping my apartment clean. and learn to solve the rubik's cubeSolution to the Rubik's cube is not touching it…..
too late…
I couldn't do it, though saying that I don't buy that much stuff (he disagrees). I'm either wearing my money, experiencing it (performing arts) or ate it. The last three things I bought was dinner (groupon), chocolates (a treat, I rarely buy expensive stuff, love cadbury roses/50% off lindt) and a sequin shower cap (it was $5 on sale). I spend much less than what everyone thinks. :P e.g. I get a lot of tickets through work (free) and promotix (cheap). - That's what I'd recommend, you won't miss out on anything other than the price tag. Though you might find housemates asking to borrow money…
Buying/shopping would include unnecessary things like ice cream (anything other than $5 Sara Lee/Con… tubs), lobster rolls and concert tickets, wouldn't it? I wouldn't want to live like that, personally, as I go out pretty much every night. It would be a life of deprivation and a life not worth living. I'm an events planner and was sent to a seminar recently where the theme was pretty much "more is more" we're all about luxury events, buying unnecessary stuff, and food that looks better than it tastes. My job does define me though. There was a party I went to where they spent $800 on balloons (10 balloons)…
However I've had friends saving up for a house who have done it. In their work they weren't exposed to the height of consumerism, so temptation wasn't as bad. They started with telling all their friends about it, to not invite them places/shopping/eating out, and instead hosted monthly bring-a-plate dinner parties at their place. They went to some of free events (actual free events, not the free entry shows were you spend a lot), but there weren't a lot of them…
It depends what kinda lifestyle you lead, whether it be possible or not. One focused on r'ships with others rather than consumerism and materialism might help.
Being an OzBargainer i already only buy the essentials.
