How much discount to ask when buying car?

Hi all, one of my mate looking to buy a Toyota 86, in near new condition. Doesn't need to be factory new.

Any idea what sort of discount off dealer advertised price we could realistically be asking? Unsure what's typica margin in car. No finance needed, and just wanting the best deal. He asked me to go with him, as he's not a chatty person himself. Any tips for us?

Looking to buy one before end of year. I'm metro WA btw.

Work out the trade value on redbook and offer rock bottom as a start.

Search up the value of the car on the internet, Gumtree, Carsales whatsoever.

Inspect the car (find some excuses to reduce the price)and put your offer as low as possible, remember you can always work your way up but not down. they may laugh at your offer but they always do that, come back at the end of the month and they will accept it.

Remember to walk away if they do not accept it.

There is a guy on here based in WA that's sells Toyota's. Can't remember his username 😁

I'm sure he will chime in. 86 sales are surely declining by now so a cash sale on a new/demo one might be an option.

    • @SPACKBACE. I am not too sure for his correct name….

    • @spackbace is the user you are after

    • Oh hai :P As if you'd forget me :)

Have no demo 86s here, have none in used cars so I can be of zero help right now :P

We do have a black manual GTS coming in January which should be mint :)

      • Hi Spackbace, any chance we could ask for extra add on like body kit etc?

        • You'd be better off just asking for discount rather than body kit etc. Your cash buyers, dealership will be looking at a quick delivery, stuff like that can delay that for weeks.

        • @Spackbace: fair enough..I'll push my luck with 15% cash then ..

Ask your mate if going for the Subaru BRZ is an option instead. I was looking at purchasing a BRZ earlier this year and at that point the Subaru was better equipped from memory. They're essentially the same car, and the BRZ was cheaper too as of February/March this year.

I'm from WA too btw, Subaru Osborne Park were willing to do a good deal at the time.

    • I think he's too much of a AE86 fan, don't think he will switch brand even mean paying more

      • Fair enough, he won't go wrong with either. These are awesome cars despite the views some people may have!

Top fleet discount on Toyota is around 24%, not all provided by the dealer though. That will give you some idea of the fat built into the rrp

  • I got $1000 off my $17000 car from Toyota dealer. not sure if good

    10% minimum.

  • Theoretically %15 0 %20 off only if you are willing to buy on the spot with Cash or Card.

Ok so this is all going to vary on whether it's new, demo, or used

New - Discounts vary considerably, there is no set %. No, we can't look at fleet pricing as that's a different ballpark altogether (there's a reason the average consumer cant get the same discount that a company with 100+ cars can get). You need to look at RRP, not Sale price, to work out the discount too. Many manufacturers (not just Toyota) put cars on special and leave next to nothing in margin. You'll be lucky to get $500 off those, $1000 if you're very lucky/come at the right time.
Dealers will also look to clear out 2017 stock right now, so you might get lucky if you're open to a colour they have in stock.

Demo - Really depends on age and kms. I'm referring to proper demonstrators here, where you'll be the first owner in the book. (You will find 'factory demos' in the used car lot. These haven't just been used for test drives or drive cars, these have been owned by the Manufacturer and are: drive day hoon cars, reviewers hoon cars, etc. - Don't compare these to a dealer demo).

Used - That's all going to depend on how long the car is in stock, and how much the dealer bought it for. Use Carsales to do a market comparison on the price, only then will you know if you're buying for a good price or not.

Just thought I'd deal with some misconceptions in here :)

TL;DR - There's no set % of discount (can be as little as 2-5% on a car on special, up to 10-15% on a car that isn't). Fleet pricing is no guage of consumer prices/possible discount.
