Should I just be going to my chemist and grabbing any pair of insoles? Should I aim for gel insoles?
Basically I stand on my feet for 12 hour shifts at work and am after a little bit more comfort in my leather shoes

Been wearing them for years and have not once come home with sore feet. You do need to replace them every year or two.
Stiff leather shoes, even when comfortable, give me foot and calf issues at night. Yet I can walk for 8 hours in sandals and crocs no problem.
Orthotic insoles helped with calf issues in particular. I haven't tried toe condoms but I think I'll need to wear them permanently.
Be careful the toe condoms don't break, or you might end up with more toes than ideal!
sandals is coming back! so many socks and sandals these days feeling quite proud
It depends on your individual foot shape/biomechanics
You might find that off the shelf orthotics work but if not you may need custom made
to be honest, these protalus insoles worked for me. I generally wear VANS which offer zero support and having to be on my feet all day, these insoles were really good.
Gel insoles will make a big difference. But even among them there are differences.
E.g. I have tried the Scholl Gel Active Everyday, and also a Dunlop insoles from Sportsdirect.
The Dunlop one seems better. It also feels a bit thicker.
