Faulty Portable Aircon?

Yesterday I purchased a portable aircon from JB Hi-Fi which was around $600, and once it was set up during the day the unit does a huge thump bang noise, and the aircon stops while the fan function keeps blowing. After a few minutes it does a another weird thump and the aircon starts to work again.

Used to have the same problem with my old unit bought from home mart several years back.

I have read about other units that it has something to do with the unit overheating?
If that’s the case why does my friends Delongi brand aircon doesn’t do this?

Are you sure it's not just the compressor turning on and off?

    • I wouldn’t know,There is no indicator or anything changes.

This is the unit I bought.

I'm no expert, but from what I've read (and personal experience with the one I have), they all make a thump noise regularly when the reach the desired temperature. It is the compressor turning on/off…much like a fridge does. If it is really loud, there could be something wrong with it maybe…

Your friend's one might just have a smaller compressor or more sound dampening material in it?

Below is referring to split systems, but the mechanics is the same…portables just have them all in one unit inside your home instead :(

  • The thump will be the compressor turning on/off. This is easy to know. The device will be much quieter, and the air coming out will not be as cold.

Your friend might have one of the inverter model Delongi units, or it might have a better compressor that doesn't thump as loudly.

  • You probably have a higher temperature set and the compressor is coming on and off, as it is trying to maintain say 26 degrees.

Turn it down to 18 and it will stay on, because on hot days the room won't get down to that temperature regardless of how powerful the unit is.
