Will I Be Denied Credit Card Buyers Protection Insurance (Underwritten by QBE)?

I hold a NAB Platinum Credit card that comes with Buyer's Protection insurance underwritten by QBE Insurance. The insurance lasts for 90 days from the date of purchase of the goods, and covers accidental loss, theft or damage. The fine print says the 100% of the goods must be paid for via the appropriate card in order for the claim to be accepted.

About a month ago I purchased a new Galaxy S8+ phone via Ebay, during one of their 20% off sales. I have two receipts, one from the vendor showing AU$1,029 and another from PayPal that shows AU$1,029 and an entry titled "voucher" for AU$-205.80, thereby bringing the total paid down to AU$823.

First question, do you think QBE will deny my claim because technically, 100% of the purchase price of the goods were not transacted via my credit card due to the application of the Ebay 20% off discount voucher? Has anyone had any experience with this?

Second question, the QBE phone person asked me to supply them with repair quotes in anticipation of my claim progressing. Because the phone is a grey import, Samsung Australia don't want to know about it, and flatly refuse to repair it, even if I tell them I am willing to pay for the repair. The phone is working perfectly, it just has a cracked screen. I want to get a genuine replacement screen. According to the person at Samsung, my IMEI indicates that the handset originates from the Middle East area. I have a mate in Saudi Arabia. Should I ask him to get a quote for repair in Saudi Arabia, and factor in the shipping cost there and back?

Any insights or advice will be greatly appreciated.

  • What's wrong with your S8+ OP? Cracked screen due to accidental damage?

    • Yes, it slipped off a small table and fell about 20cm onto a tiled floor. The front screen is cracked, and one of the cracks runs right across the dock, making it difficult to use the handset. In all other respects, the phone is working perfectly.

  • Have you checked if there is any excess on this insurance? It might be cheaper to just pay for a new screen yourself.

    • Buyer's Protection insurance from NAB credit cards does not incur an excess. So long as the damage or loss fits into a covered category, such as an accidental drop that breaks the screen, and so long as the damage or loss is within three months of the date of purchase, then you are covered.

I'd just get a quote that seems reasonable - or something from Samsung AU which says "cant' be repaired in Australia" and the replacement cost.

  • Samsung Australia service, via their online chat, confirms that the handset is from the UAE. Therefore it is irreparable in Australia, and therefore needs to be shipped back to the Samsung service centre in UAE. I have saved the transcript and sent a copy of it to QBE for consideration. I am just worried that 20% of the device's total cost was paid via an Ebay voucher, rather than on my credit card.

  • I have a QBE purchase insurance on an ANZ card

Had an LG6 with a cracked back. Purchased on eBay with 20% off (Taiwan stock, I believe).

LG official repairer charged $99 to fix it. I put the receipt through to QBE for a claim and they paid it

    • Thanks mare, I appreciate that. It makes me feel better that the 20% off discount did not affect your claim. I am not so lucky with Samsung. Unlike LG, Samsung will not even allow me to pay for a replacement screen because it is not an Australia device

Why would a discount matter in regards to a claim?
You didn't pay the balance with a different card or in cash; the entire amount payable was paid with your one card.

    • Because insurance companies will do anything to get out of payment

  • No problem with the Amex Essentials, insurance provided by Chubbs Insurance.

Just a quick update, because Samsung Australia refused to repair the glass on my handset, due to it being a grey import, the insurance company refunded me the total purchase price of my phone via a cheque. That is a very happy outcome

    • Amazing! What a great outcome for you!!!!

Yes, I agree. I got the refund cheque last week. So far the insurance company has not asked me to return the phone to them. The cracked screen is localised to the lower left hand corner, and does not significantly impact the usability of the handset. If I get to keep the phone, then I will just pocket the money, and it will be a double bonus, all with no excess payable. I love credit card buyers protection insurance
