Google Pixel 2 XL 64GB/128GB - $1249/ $1399 Online/Instore @ JB HiFi (~180 Less Coupled with Gift Cards) + Free Google Home Mini

770

Most of us including myself jumped on the previous deal, but this is a great deal for anyone who just held off.

$150 discount to match google store. Couple it with the Ebay gift cards from this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/350140 , works out to be a much better price in comparison to other offerings out there.

Google Pixel 2 64GB/128GB models are also on a $100 discount to match the google store offering.

Cant call it a rookie mistake from my end! somehow it the store title got deleted while I was posting. Thanks for the heads up

      • +1

All good mate! Even I forget the price/store sometimes :)

  • +12

$900 would be the right price.

    • With the 15% gift cards, it comes close to $1100 and anyone claiming TRS could get it closer to the price. Much better than their RRP I guess.

    • +11

      Or go for Oneplus.

Google has their pricing way off.

      • +2

I agree. Google are demanding far too much for their phones. I jumped on the original pixel xl at launch and yes its a nice phone, but in hindsight I will probably buy a lesser known brand when i need to upgrade next. they are just getting too competitive to pass up, and the onePlus 5t looks great.

        • Advertising as well. The cost of advertising trickles down to consumers. OnePlus has no traditional advertising, so they're cheaper. Same for Xiaomi.

      • +1

a large part of the pixel is to promote android and drive new features into the market place for other phone manufacturers to eventually adopt, and also not make android not look like poor mans' iPhone … it's not Googles / Alphabets important revenue stream, it's a marketing tool to position android. Who else will invest and drive android innovation against Apple ? They take what Google releases in Android and cut it back to a price point to sell a phone.

For android phone manufacturers, once you buy the phone the revenue stream ends, hence updates stop when they have new models as people don't buy old phones, for Google the revenue stream just starts via ads.

It's not what we think the pixel is worth, it's where Google want to position it in the market.

I'm an android user as it's cheaper than apple … and it's phone with a browser ….

    • +1

Idk, maybe a bit less than that. Doesn't really have a flagship screen on it.

    • +5

I'd say around $500 would be the right price for any hi-end phone, my personal opinion though.

      • I think you are about right on the $500 mark for high end phones, and it's what many android flagship phones cost after 18-24 months and they don't seem to come out with "compelling innovations" to upgrade on the day they are released, unless work pays for it.

Even the IPhone X isn't a hot seller compared to iPhone 8 unless you really want facial recognition …. my old moto (2 years ago) had facial recognition instead of fingerprint reader, all you need is an high res front facing camera and software.

    • +1

Interesting and great that you got fans on your proper comment of the phone price. I made a similar comment on a recent Google Pixel 2 deal and received several votes down to hide my comment.

All I have said is just $1100 sth for a Pixel 2 is expensive. And those gave me votes down actually discussed on the same page about how to get the phone at a cheaper price.

People on this deal page seems to be more reasonable type, lol.

Anyone got an insight into Jbhfi staff discounting from JBHFI advertised…..Pixel 2 XL 128GB
Google RRP $1549 Jbhifi staff came down to $1500
    1st Sale until 24\12\17
    When google reduced by $50=Jbhifi by $100=JB staff $10 aff again= $1439

    2nd Sale until 31\12\17
Now Google reduced by $150 and JBHIFI moved to same price $1399
Staff refusing so far to go lower stating below cost price….WTF…..there must be at least 2% they can play with?

Now JBHIFI has 7 day price guarantee….boxing day(has not reduced in last 8 years…..but then the Note 8 biggest 2 day drop to $998 never happened before!)

America price on exchange is $1139 for Pixel 2 XL 128GB
    REF: https://www.androidauthority.com/deal-pixel-2-pixel-2-xl-get…
    REF2: http://www.xe.com/currencyconverter/convert/?Amount=874&From…

So seems there is a $260AU TAX!

    • Whats this staff discount you're talking about? As in you have a friend who works at JB, or do you actually just ask the staff at the store?

      • Just asking staff….
aspirepranesh already answered in my post!

        • Shite…. Bought the phone on the 11th of Dec. I guess it is out of the 7 day window? I cant find this info anywhere on their website mate. You happen to have a link?

    • So the amount they can discount changes depending on the advertised price. At $1549 they would have a certain price they can go down to. Once there is a sale price, then a lot of the time, they can't go lower. I used to work in sales at JB.

      • They do work on commission ie. if sell 10x $1000 phones in a month get a bonus or reach $5000 in sales….no?

        • No. So each item they sell has a commission amount associated with it. They more they discount they less commission they make. It's actually more complex than that but overall that's how it works

        • @Bilbos86: I can understand no further discount on the Note 8 coming down $500….but this is only $150!

        • @PLANT: eh, it just depends on the product.

        • @PLANT: certain products have less margin than others eg. Apple. Google is like Apple where they don’t make much on.

    • Note 8 at $998 ??? Where?

      • +1

        JB, Black Friday.

  • Does anyone know if JB offer any 7/10/30 day price guarantee??

    • -1

      no

    • Yes they do, they offer a 30 day price guarantee. Source: got $100 back last Friday from when I purchased my 2 XL at the end of November.

  • Feel gipped! Literally bought a Pixel 2 XL this morning from JB and price drops another $50 by the same evening. Going to call in the morning and hope that refund the difference!

    • enjoy the new phone and don't let the $50 spoil it for you before the new phone feeling wears off.

Buying a $1000 phone is an experience not a transaction, buying a $400 phone is transaction.

      • +1

Your last line is silly logic

    • +1

They’ll refund the difference with no issue at all.

  • Do these still have screen issues or have they been fixed in newer batches since then?

    • +3

issue was blown way out of proportion because there was so much media attention on the phone. Seriously you won't have an issue

    • +3

It's a pretty poor screen still

    • -5

There was never any screen issues. People were disappointed that there was a colour shift when viewed on an angle. This happens on all phones but the angle is a bit less on the Pixel 2 XL before it shifts to blue. Seems pretty minor when all you have to do is look at the phone straight on.

      • Hmm thanks guys, got an RMA coming for an issue on my OG pixel xl. Will probably sell the new one to fund this then if the screen isn't an issue, what's a fair price to sell it for on ebay u reckon? $550?

        • I'm conflicted now, might keep the rma.. Or go see it in person

        • What was your issue with Pixel 1?

        • I'd like to know what your RMA issue was also. I bought mine October 2016 and I've got some pretty bad screen burn in (from the home buttons and status bar). I've read that Google has rma'd devices for this?

      • This device 100% has screen issues. You clearly don't own one and if you do, you won the screen lottery.

The blue shift itself is not the issue, it is the fact that some displays on the 2 XL have varying levels of severity in regards to the shifting. Seen it with my own eyes.

Oh and my first unit had navigation bar and status bar burn in within two weeks of use that I could see while watching YouTube videos.

"There was never any screen issues" yeah good on ya champ! The only thing that I agree with is that the issues are blown out of proportion.

    • +2

I think its still the same. I wouldn't buy it. Google need to be punished for their decisions.

    • +1

Mine did.. Blue top third.. White middle and red bottom third..

Even JB guy admitted it was horrid.. Either people are willing to accept sub par or they haven had a good screen before.

+1 Huawei Mate 10 for a lot less.

      • +2

Or maybe people didn't have the same issues you did. They don't call it a panel lottery for nothing.

      • google are a software company , not phone manufacturer, pixel is about what android can do, Samsung, Huawei, LG, Lenovo etc are the people that will take android and put it into decent hardware.

        • QA is Google's responsibility

        • Yep those other manufacturers use android we all know it, they don't use the Google name.

These products are branded Google, it's not marketed as a LG.

        • You don't hear google bragging how many Pixels they sold, vs Apple sells Iphones … or Iphones on IOS 11 vs Android 7 ….

I like my Android phone at $360 for an LG V20, its great value, $340 for a Moto great value, if I was spending $1000 it would be an iPhone…. better resale value and longer software support than android, and can get support in an apple store face to face and be treated like a valued customer instead of a nuisance.

When I had an IPhone …. 4 year old battery was getting short on life … paid for a changeover battery in the store they have me a new iPhone (same model) changeover and I was out of the store in 30 mins ….. try doing that with even a 2 year old android phone with aged battery ….

  • +2

Bonus Google home mini as well

    • Duh! missed that…Added now!

  • +2

Like this phone, but without headphone jack it just doesn't cut it for me :(

  • +8

Are these really that expensive? Crazy

  • +10

$1400 for an android. Who do they think they are, apple?

    • +2

No they are much better than apple.

  • -5

This phone should not be over $1000 hands down. Touched it in jb hi fi. it is a plastic shell, nowhere feels as good as note 8. whoever spent that much on it is a no brainer.

    • +13

It's not a plastic shell, it's aluminium with a coating. Might pay to do some small research before accusing other people of having no brain, eh?

Also, the worthiness of a phone to others isn't dictated by your subjective thoughts on the outside material, so… maybe stay in your own lane?

      • -2

Stay in your own lane? Are you Leroy from the Hood?

    • +7

that's not how you use the expression no brainer either. agree with the other poster, you are poorly informed.

      • +3

You'd think it would be a no brainer to figure out how to use that expression.
Maybe some shrimp fell off his bbq.

        • +2

It’s because it takes two to tango. That’s why you shouldn’t spend so much on it.

  • Does this have a notification led?

  • +1

Fantastic phone, definitely screen isn't good as Samsung Note 8 but the camera, battery life and speed make up for it!

    • Don't think camera is better than Note 8, but algorithm does. I'm still using Nexus 5 and very satisfied, however, I still don't get why this Nexus worth $1400, maybe it's only for Android stock fan?

      • it's because IPhone X is $1400 and Google doesn't want Android to look cheap, especially in the corporate market ….. it in no way reflects hardware development costs or software development costs…. heck they give the software away to other manufacturers.

  • Is it true you can only use $500 worth of gift cards max when purchasing online at JB?

    • No, you can only use 5 separate gift cards.
You can combine lower value gift cards in to higher value gift cards by purchasing a JB Hifi gift card and paying with up to five gift cards.

      • Do you mean you can use gift cards to buy gift cards?

        • Yes! You won't get the bonus $10 from JB Hifi, however you can buy bigger gift cards to combine the value of smaller gift cards

  • +2

That's insane price for a phone. You can buy a decent Windows laptop and a cheap, mid-range smartphone for that money. I wanted to get it for the camera, but I might be better of to just buy a dedicated Sony/Canon/Nikon digital camera, or even a good semi-pro DSLR.

    • +5

      Comparing apples to oranges..

    • You could say I got my switch and Xbox one x cheaper than that as well. All depends how people wish to spend thier money.

    • I buy $300 - $400 phones and have a DSLR … the DSLR takes much better pictures due to lens size etc especially in low light, BUT I can't always have it with me due to size so it's planned eg holidays, parties, etc.

The phone doesn't take as good a photo, especially in low light conditions, but it's always with me.

It's good to have both, and the DSLR you will have for 10 years before upgrading (even entry level eg D3400 are 24 megapixels and have bluetooth) , phone you can do every 24 mths as the battery ages if you didn't over invest, and you get now OS, features and camera in the phone.

My moto X had a killer camera, 21 megapixel, was $399 as newer model was released.

  • +2

$1400 for a phone!!! Which world do we live in? Is it just here or this phone is so expensive in the US too?

  • +7

for people complaining its too expensive, you really gotta blame Apple. the price for the iPhone X affected the whole industry. because the iphone X is over $1000, all the other flagship companies are gonna be like "hey, apple made a $1000 phone, we can do $1000 phones too!

The iphone x put a green light out there that it is okay for a phone to be over $1000.

    • And consumers encouraged them big time. It won’t be long before phones start hitting the $2000 mark.

    • Sorry if im off but… Doesnt the iPhone x price start at $1600 and goes to $1800 for the larger gb size?
That plus apple care for 200 odd $

This has destroyed the market… and set an imaginary price that companies think they can now charge…

      • The IPhone X isn't the apple market leader in apples volume sales, the iPhone 8 is what sells in volume at $1000 mark, the IPhone X is innovation that will trickle down to the next release of Iphones.

Remember the 3.5mm head phone jack saga …. all forgotten ….. now wireless buds are all the rage.

Facial recognition is next, the home button will go, which the X has and it targeted at early adopters more than mainstream users ….

It hasn't destroyed the market, it has set a market for innovation in phones at a premium price, or wait a year and get it as it trickles down to other models.

Has been the case in carbon fibre bikes and running gear for years …. stuff trickles down to cheaper models the next year.

  • Went to buy the JB gift cards and the maximum value is $50 via the drop down options. So I would have to buy 25 gift cards…? Seems too much of a PITA to be honest, I will wait for the next deal personally.

    • PITA would be they limit max 4 gift cards per transaction and you have 25 of them LOL.

  • One question: if I buy it through gift cards, will I get an invoice with full amount for TRS use?

    • Had the same question last week, and the answer is yes, u can claim. The invoice amount will have $1249/1399 depending on the model you pick up

  • +1

I disagree with people complaining about smartphones being too expensive, as some use these devices all day every day, but yet some have no problem dropping ~2k on a 24 month contract through some telco that's taking them for a ride, doesn't make any sense.

I've said it before, I'll say it now and guaranteed I'll say it again in the future - everything has a place on this site, whether you think it's a bargain or not, if someone sees value in something and there's a sale/price drop: it deserves to be on here.

    • -2

You use modem router all day every day at work or home, should that be around 2k as well? This is Ozbargain, value for money and performance should be a better bargain.

      • +1

That's not the same, the router only serves one purpose, where as a personal smartphone has many.

This is Ozbargain, value for money and performance should be a better bargain.

This shouldn't apply to everyone though, if I want to spend my hard earned money on something I see value in, that's my decision, and being informed of the latest price-drops and sales is useful.

  • -6

Got this free as part of Telstra deal (Pixel 2 +Google Home mini+Aiaiai Earphone). Not sure what to do with it. Anyone want them?

  • Hi,
How many gift cards can I use per order (specifically for Pixel 2 xl) ?

    • I rolled a dice and six was the outcome

  • +2

Before you go out and dump $1249/ $1399 on Google Pixel 2 XL 64GB/128GB, I recommend looking at a display model in a few Telstra Shop's. I saw one the over day which was running a screensaver and when I closed it, it had a massive Google logo burnt into the middle of the OLED screen. I was willing to give Google /LG the benefit of the doubt with blue tint/hue polarization issue as I was wanting to get the next-gen stock android experience phone, but after seeing the OLED image persistence problem, this is serious issue on a phone this price, its not just temporary burn in like reports on YouTube etc. which can be fixed by android update ☹ I think they will need the do a hardware revision with a better quality OLED display and possible replace the first gen phones/ screens in future.

    • +1

While the XL's screen may experience burn in over time, the phones on display in store are on 24/7, therefore it's not a fair comparison and certainly not relevant to real-world use.

      • +2

display in store are on 24/7

The screen isn't on 24/7 is it? Is it more likely that the screen is on two minutes every ten minutes from nine to five.

  • I wonder how they will sell the phone with this price…. ill pay 800 max…

  • I bought a Pixel 2 XL last night in store with 10 x gift vouchers totalling $280 (some 5 x $30 bought through ebay at 15% and the rest from doing online surveys). I've upgraded from a Note 4. Screen burn-in here I come!

There is apparently no limit of gift cards you can use in store, however they will take your ID if your using multiple.

  • I am surprise it is discounted in the holiday season where company would do their best to maximise the profit. It make me wonder whether further discount will occur after new year.

  • Anyone know the warranty at jb HiFi.

This phone has 2 years with Google and I read Google covers 2 years on all pixels 2 regardless of purchase location but not sure if it's correct

    • Bought Pixel 1 from JB outright in Feb. Had battery issues 2 weeks ago, brought in phone and JB sent in internally to be reassessed. Google was not mentioned. was hoping they would jsut do a straight up replace or upgrade to Pixel 2. I saw in the system, I was about 3-4 months out to exercise it. Go in store as the system will tell them what they can/cannot do for your phone.

      • No I know but Google came out and said they will offer 2 years for all Google pixel 2's. Let me find the article later

We’re very confident that the Pixel 2 delivers an exceptional smartphone experience, to give users peace of mind, every Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will now come with a 2-year warranty worldwide.

        Source
        https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/www.androidauthority.com/goo…

        • Hopefully purchases from JB are honoured by Google.

I purchased a 6P from JB and Google told me to return it to JB for a warranty issue and weren't keen on assisting.

( gave up and bought a Pixel XL instead… also from JB).
