I like lychees, and lychees are on sale. That is all.

Normally they are 19.90
Saw it selling 18.99 before at Coles. Local fruit shop is 14.99, but average quality.
Like all fruit depends on quality. Good ones are worth more, bad ones worth less.
I don’t even see the point of fresh fruit and veggies deals on Ozbargain, it all depends on quality and that is something that cant be judged, so price is meaningless.
Yes, everything is meaningless. But I think you'll still find the word 'meaningless' is in the dictionary. Merry Christmas!
You must be fun at parties.

Didn’t realise bargains were a popularity contest
Bargains is not a popularity contest, neither is it about engaging in a philosophical discussion about the concept of price.
You're thinking too much about this: it's a deal on lychees.
it really is not a deal, unless they are the small seed variety. Otherwise it is easily priced similarly in every market you step into. That is why this is not a confirmed slam dunk deal as the votes on this seem to imply.
I applied the same concept on the Giant Cherry sized mangos from Aldi at a dollar each. Quality matters.
How's the quality? Small seed and super sweet ??
Usually the Coles lychees are hit and miss, mostly miss and I prefer the ones from Aldi.
But this week they have been amazing, really sweet and small seeds and they don't stick to the skin making them easy to peel.if the seeds get to the size of a peppercorn then you that's really good.
(profanity) love lychees.
Small, yum and full of…..
… fructose?
Its same price at Aldi for 1-2 weeks already :)
I love Lychee tooI saw this same price at Woolies the other day, down from $14.
I bought them at Aldi in the 500gb box @ $10 k/g but they don't taste as nice as the ones at woolies, and some of them had mould growing on them.
there are many varieties of lychees..
unfortunately the ones at coles and woollies are hardly that great
In what way?
usually small to medium fruit and large seeds..
if you go to the markets or Asian grocers.. they have different varieties that sell between $8 - $14/kg and they are medium to large size fruit with small seeds and very sweet.
when I say small sometimes they can be the size of a peppercorn
http://www.australianlychee.com.au/about-lychees/varieties
when I was young my sister and will eat kilos of the stuff and compete who would get the smallest seed. we have on occasion had seeds so small its almost not existent
Ones with larger seeds are often sweeter & juicier.
@cityofsydney: quite the opposite, sweeter ones have smaller seeds
@cityofsydney: This is absolutely untrue.
Agree. I had Aldi ones last night. Seeds as big as kalamata olives.
Still tasty. But it's like paying for meat per kg but having a huge bone that adds to the weight, the value isn't very good.
@kickling:
its the same for most tropical fruit…you can get small seeds for fruits like longan, rambutans, mangoes, jackfruit, durian, mangosteen, persimmon, even dragon fruit you can get varities that have less seeds and is so sweet its like eating a lump of sugar
Nationalwide?
Yep, the link says national so it’s a nationwide special.
Thanks for that.
Lychees are the greatest thing to ever grow from this fine earth. 10 butts is a bargain
Imagine what you could do with those 10 butts if you saved them.
I don't want to know what you plan on doing with those 10 butts, but make sure you peel those lychees first
I respectfully disagree, durian is the king of fruits.
Cant get durian here.
Gotta get those extra yellow hearts https://www.polygon.com/zelda-breath-of-the-wild-guide-walkt…
10 butts is only a bargain if you like them and they're free. Otherwise the lychees at $9.99/Kg would be a good runner up.
Rambutans are where it's at.
Second greatest IMHO. The prize for best has to go to Rambutan. I just wish that there was somewhere I could get in Sydney while they are still fresh. The supermarkets have them from time to time, but they're usually overpriced and starting to age.
You gotta go to the Asian markets. You'll find them there. Saw some in Coles but they looked pitiful.
Any suggestions for around the Sydney CBD? I'm near world square and keep an eye on the grocers around Chinatown, Thaitown etc, but must have looked at the wrong time of year.
@newdad:
just go to paddy markets.best is Vietnamese markets, in marickville, bankstown and cabramatta
Yup the paddy markets. use your ozbargaining skills and haggle for a few dollars less…
The wood from the seed sticking to the flesh when you eat them ruins it IMO.
Wait until you try mangosteen.
this! they're bloody expensive here
about $10/kg
I like you ;)

+1 for description
Come live in Cairns. $4.99 at the local farmer's markets right now. So much tasty fruit!
and sweat it out with that bloody humidity!
Ahh, so much good and cheap tropical fruit around there! Nice memories.
spend a summer in VN. Lychee is like 50 cent a kilo there =)
So are the girls…!
too far?
I'm sorry, I'll let myself out…
Sorry, they only take Dong there.
Spiders come in different colors…
Be very careful if giving lychees to children, it was recently discovered they are slightly poisonous and can kill children:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-02-02/lychee-identified-as-c…Quote: "For more than two decades, apparently healthy children in the Indian region of Bihar suffered sudden seizures and lost consciousness. A third of them died, leaving doctors baffled.
But a team of American and Indian scientists say they have found the cause of the mystery illness, which killed more than 100 children a year: eating too many lychees on an empty stomach."
These kids are eating a massive amount yearly… If your kids are eating that much here.. You have too much money
It isn't how much they eat in a year, it's how much they eat in a short time. How much and how short a time are not defined in the article, and the article infers that it varies from person to person.
I'm worried that somebody will discover their toddler likes the taste, and will give a largish quantity to the toddler. For a toddler, with maybe one-tenth the body mass of an adult, a "largish quantity" could be quite small.
that's reasonable
I know what you mean Russ. My toddlers would eat a kilo, if I let them.
The quality control in India is going to be different to Australia. Also, are the Lychees at Coles being imported from India or elsewhere, or are they Australian grown? Also everything in moderation is generally fine.
It's not a quality problem, all lychees in all countries have this problem. So do some other fruits related to the lychee.
Your quote is out of context. The article says this:
"young children frequently spend their day eating lychees in the surrounding orchards; many return home in the evening uninterested in eating a meal""To guard against the illness, the researchers recommended minimising lychee consumption and making sure children had an evening meal."
So the children are eating nothing but lychees for two months. That would be the reason for their illnesses.
So the children are eating nothing but lychees for two months.
The article does NOT say that. You are exaggerating.
Your quote is out of context.
While I could have quoted the entire article, most people have a TL;DR response to long posts. I quoted enough to get at-risk people to read the article.
In retrospect, I should have said ".. and can kill children if eaten in large quantities." But how much is too much?
"Parents in affected villages report that during May and June, young children frequently spend their day eating lychees in the surrounding orchards; many return home in the evening uninterested in eating a meal," the researchers wrote….
To me "frequently" means "less than half of the time". It is indeterminate, but it doesn't mean "all of the time", which is the essence of what you said.
It's not about quality, lychees have hypoglycin whicih is bad for children.
Another article, same thing, http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-38831240
From the article, "which contained hypoglycin, a toxin that prevents the body from making glucose."
Wouldn't this make is a problem for diabetics, who may take their regular dose of insulin, which could be too much in this situation? Strange that there is no warning for diabetics.
You'd have to ask a diabetic if they already know what food to avoid. I believe the point of the article is that we didn't know it affected children at all.
Well when you are eating that amount of glucose rich fruits.
@skywards:
It's the opposite of what you said. Lychees make your blood glucose go down, not up.
Thanks for good informative info.
I like your description OP, that's all.
If you believe in Chinese ying and yang stuff, my mum always warns us don't overeat Lychees because they are "heat" type of food and can tip the balance of your body's ying and yang and that's why people suffer from stomach wrangling type of pain from eating too much of it without eating other "cool" type of food to balance it out, just saying! :P
No durian + beer as well!
What is "cool" food? Sweet?
I want to know too, but I have a inkling it's just like salad and stuff…
watermelon is considered cool
Yea mum and dad told me bittermelon is cool food. It ain't cool for my tastebuds.
I generally learnt it as foods that keep you hydrated or encourages good digestion, stuff like steamed greens, watermelon, broth, and lemons
Don't overeat on mangoes either.
Monsterios are worse. A little is nice, but more than that and you'll regret it.
Went down to Australia Fair Coles - The $10 ones were terrible. They did have 400g prepacks which looked really good - $8 though.
Got some @ $9.99/kg at Woolies on the weekend.
I paid the same price at Woolworths Casula yesterday. Save further 5% by using gift cards purchased at discount. 😂
i think Harris Farm selling it for $9, and started last week
How much in Cabramatta?
Check yourself and let us know.
