Query re: Telstra and Optus contracts and iPhone 8 offer

Hi all,

I've got a 2 year old iPhone 6S that has picked up a cracked screen (despite being under a glass protector) in the last week which affects use of the touchscreen.

I could pay $150-175 to repair the cracked screen, but started to think about whether a new phone is worth it, and the iPhone 8 $59 p/m offer via Optus at the moment is tempting me.

Can anyone advise the best/cheapest way I can access this given the following info:

  • I am one month into a Telstra BYO $40 per month 12 month contract. Contract buyout is $330.

  • Next week, husband will be 12 months into a 24 month iPhone 7 contract with Optus. He is on a $65 plan which comes to $97 a month including handset repayments and insurance. He has no desire to upgrade his phone but would be interested in switching to a cheaper contract (and is happy to recontract for another 2 years).

We asked Optus how much it would cost to switch from his current contract to the iPhone 8 offer - and was told it was $528.

The cheaper option at the moment is for me to buy out my brand new Telstra contract and switch to the Optus iPhone 8 offer.

Does anyone know if there's a way to access this offer with less upfront costs?

If you hub upgrade, does it save 97-59 = 28 per/month? For the rest of 12 months, his plan saved $336 which is less than $200 compare to your contract buyout fee $330. I reckon it is better to upgrade his plan.

The best way to do it might be upgrade your plan to Telsta $59 F&F and get a free Pixel 2 + Google mini then sell them if you don't need for $800+.
Either way, upgrade your hub's plan is better then buyout your contract.

    • Thanks! That makes sense - and definitely makes sense to get my husband off his $97 pm plan onto something cheaper.

  • Could you not just buy a new phone and finish off the Telstra BYO? Would be rare for a plan including a phone to be good value (plus you have to pay an additional $330…).

There is a deal currently for 15% off JB Hi Fi vouchers through PayPal, could be worth using to put towards a phone?

  • Don’t pay out the contract… giving them free cash…

Rather approach a Telstra store and see if they will match the Optus deal. I’ve been with Telstra some time now and most often with byo plans, moving / relocking into a contact, they don’t have issues waiving fees (or just try chat, but they don’t always have the authorisation to match unless you get a “supervisor” or above… so they say).

As for the Optus plan, weigh up the option if you want to forgo the upfront cash for the future saving (considering interest earned on the cash or other opportunities that you may require it for in the future.

You could probably also then sell your old handset with cracked screen for a price that’s reasonable pre repair cost.
