Suggestion: Strip photos of metadata

After Comments in https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/350119, I would like to suggest that OzBargain strips metadata from photos uploaded to OzBargain.

If someone takes a photo while home and posts it to OzBargain, there is a risk that their GPS coordinates may be made available to all users.

Facebook and other Social media sites already remove the metadata before publishing.

Most photos seem to be uploaded and linked to external sites anyway.

I hope none of the forum topics or comments inflames someone enough to want to track down another user! haha

I don't see any risk, what's someone going to do? I remember once someone didn't specify which store the deal was at but someone used the metadata to update the post.

      No worries.

I just don't think most people would realise if they posted a photo of a receipt they took at home, it may show where they live.

Unfortunately there are bad people in the world and telling them you just bought a $2500 laptop for only $2000 and here's a copy of the receipt and my address, come around anytime, just doesn't feel right.

It's only a suggestion, as most Social sites already remove all exif data, I was surprised that OzBargain didn't.

        I agree, that's a good point

You can disable logging of EXIF data on your phone, it's one of the first things I do when I get a new handset. Tracking people using GPS data in photos isn't exactly new, so if you're still uploading photos with that information in them in 2017 then you're doing it wrong.

There’s always going to be people who don’t know to do this though. Helmets on bicycles and seatbelts in cars are compulsory too even though you could easily argue that people are doing something wrong if not using them

    • But I want it on for photos I don't upload (99.9%)…I would have to remember to "clean" the photo before I uploaded it?

  • Thanks, now I'm all paranoid. :/

  • Thanks for the suggestion, we will implement stripping the extra info from when images are uploaded. Coming soon….

    • This was rolled out a few days ago.
