Speeding Fine in M4 Roadworks (NSW) - Multiple Speed Zones

Got pulled over for going 85 in a 60 zone on the M4 roadworks at 4am this morning (travelling westbound).

Where the cop pulled me over 100m down the road was a road works 80km/h zone sign.

This was about halfway between Concord Rd and Homebush. Cop claims that it was still a 60 zone from parramatta road. I don’t recall seeing any speed signs coming onto the M4. He fined me and I’m awaiting the infringement in the mail but I suspect it will be ~$460 and 4 demerits. Unfortunately I had to get to work in regional NSW so couldn’t double back and check the signs at the start of M4 and won’t be back in Sydney for a while and by then roadworks zones probably would have changed.

If anybody is travelling or has travelled on the M4 westbound today is it 60, or is it 80km/h? Where is the transition zone?

Side question: It was a motorcycle cop - do they carry radar/lidar on their bikes? He never showed me what speed he clocked me at. Also do they have dashcams that would show what the street signs would have been at that time of the morning?

  • He fined me and I’m awaiting the infringement in the mail….

What exactly did he do after you were pulled over?

There's a chance that you'll never receive anything in the mail. Sometimes (no guarantees) they just don't bother or they're too lazy to issue the ticket when they get back. Or he might be feeling nice because "got some" this morning!

He never showed me what speed he clocked me at.

Contrary to popular belief, they don't have to show you anything. The alleged speed will be on the ticket and you may choose to fight it in court (and in court, if it's just your word against his, you're unlikely to win the case).

    • He checked my license took it back to his bike and came back and said I will receive in the mail. Didn’t get breathalyser which I thought was a bit strange.

It sounds a bit strange that he didn't ask the usual questions like why you were speeding or whether you knew what speed you were doing, etc.

Did he even tell you why you were pulled over or what this ticket was going to be for? lol

        • Oh sorry yeh he said that sort of stuff. But I was genuinely confused about the speed signage - he just said that I should have been going 60 still from parramatta rd and there were no signs yet saying that the limit had increased.

          @chillybags:

To be honest, I still don't think you're doomed just yet. Sometimes you come across a-hole cops and sometimes you come across some nicer cops.

If you got a nicer one and he thought you were genuinely confused by the roadwork signs, he may not even issue the ticket.

It's hard to say for sure, but fingers crossed!

    • Wrong, MOBIPOL is now used, electronic infringements it will be posted or emailed to you.

I'm aware of that, but it still doesn't take away the officer's discretion.

wait til you get the ticket, then you know you've been fined

read what's on the ticket (if it arrives)

    then pay or object

  • I'm not sure about the speed limit in the roadworks zone you asked about but I would a have thought that if there was no specific speed signage (at the roadworks) then the speed would be the same as what it was when you got onto the M4 at which ever entry point.

Tickets can take some time to arrive to you in the mail so expect even up to 1 month from date of incident. I guess just wait patiently and see.

In some circumstances you can apply for a REVIEW of the infringement and MAY be able to apply for leniency but only for certain types of driving offences. If it is however a speeding offence by > 20km/h over the limit, it does not seem likely you will get leniency given the "dangerous" nature of the offence. • I went on the M4 tonight to go home from work tonight. The speed limit is still sixty (first speed limit sign) until past all the roadworks where a second speed limit sign says it’s 80.
