Are you taking time off between Christmas and New Year's Day?

From casual conversations I get the impression that quite a few people are not taking any time off other than the gazetted holidays, or even working on the holidays (e.g. cafés and restaurants). I suspect it may be a sign of living cost pressure. So, an informal poll here. Feel free to elaborate on your line of work and where you are.

I'm taking about 3.5 weeks, last day was last Friday, kinda wished for more! But have been so pumped to get some time off finally.

  • From 22nd til 28th off, then new years eve til 5th

  • 1 day on 29th - just to make it a 3 day weekend. Working pub holidays and everything else :(

our plant - last day 7th dec, return 8th jan

        • ? Really? Is that legal?

  • Dont want to take leave but they made me do it. Previous jobs we can be rostered any day of the week even public holidays. So i chose to work them all public holidays. Sure the extra cash was a bonus but i just like the slow pace in the office due to most customers close on these days.

My current job dont do public holiday rosters and weekends but they do skeleton staff during christmas period. Still usually chose to work this period also but was asked to take the christmas and new year off this year.

  • I work through it in return for time off later, when travelling is cheaper / time. More convenient.

  • Business closed for the week. I'd work through it if it were an option however.

  • Last day of school yesterday and back on the 29th Jan (I think). Yay teachers :)

  • Working every day 21st December to 8th January. FIFO offshore oil and gas industry

    Hahaha no.

I am a public servant and turning up on all those business days to do nothing and attend morning tea. It is better taking the time off when it is off-peak and costs of travel is reduced.

Forced leave between Christmas and New Years but other than that working on through, saving my leave for a more extended holiday next year..

  • Off until early Jan, and then leave Mid Jan to Feb.

I’m taking a month off, including 6 days of unpaid leave.
Longest break I have had for 15 years.
I am very excited. It includes 2 weeks at a house near the beach where I am going swim, read books, eat good food, drink good beer and do nothing at all constructive.

  • Working between Christmas and New Year. There will be 5 people in our department out of like 50, it’s a great way to save annual leave and generally it’s shorter than the 9-5 hours…

  • I rely on a bunch of external consultants to help with my projects (self-employed). They're all on leave from the 22nd and come back on the 8th of Jan. Might as well have a break.

  • Self employed. The two weeks from Christmas is the only time I can generally take leave as it's when most of my clients also close down. Though this year I'm hoping to take 3 weeks as it's been a solid first half of the financial year so can afford to take a little more time off if work doesn't come calling.

  • Working the time between Christmas and New Year is usually a doddle. The boss is happy because someone has volunteered and there usually isn’t much on in most places so you can eat Christmas leftovers and surf the web; then put something together to show how hard you worked and to to put on the time sheet. However, it can backfire if they need something urgently and you are the designated worker; then it becomes a scramble with little support.

    Happy, and safe, holidays everyone.

  • Couldn't get any time off as most of my team already requested those dates off so I'm working through, nothing to do with living cost pressure as it doesn't make any difference to how much I get paid.

  • I have found taking holidays during this very crowded and expensive time is not a good idea.
Furthermore the traffic totally dies in Syudney and Melbourne making the trip to work a pleasure for a change.
Also a chance to do "catch-up" work on projects without any interruptions or diversions.
Enjoy the festive season either way

  • OP needs to distinguish between full time and casual workers since full time workers get 4 weeks paid leave every year regardless of when they take them. Hence nothing to do with cost pressures.
Casual workers on the other hand may find themselves under cost pressures and hence this is an opportune time to perhaps work extra hours and in some cases under penalty rates.

    • Nah, keep the poll simple. Feel free to write your comments or start your own poll. :p

You're probably right about that, but it was speculation on my part, not part of the poll. Maybe I've been chatting up too many café workers. On the other hand a co-worker indicated he might work 27th-29th due to work deadlines.

      • In that case poll results are irrelevent as many replys have pointed out in different words.
But an interetsing poll to take none-the less to determine how many are affected by cost pressures at present.

        • As I said, sussing out cost of living issues was not the main reason for the poll, I just wanted a distribution of leave patterns. The large number of Other means a further poll should refine the choices. Be my guest.

  • Working straight thru it except new years day will build up the holidays for another time. :)

  • Christmas Day is my rostered day off but I'm working Boxing Day and day after. Also working on New Years Eve and New Years Day. Started working as Assistant in Nursing three months ago so don't have many holidays as yet.
