Ford Focus LW MK2 Auto Faulty Transmission/Clutches and Related Mechanical Problems. Do You Suggest to Buy This Model?

Hi All, I’m after the market for a Decent car and found a Ford Focus LW MK2 6 speed auto (2013) car with reasonable price and conditions. But, while going through some reviews platforms including productreview.com, the main issue that everyone reported was faulty transmission/clutches including Shuddering, jerking, gears not engaging, dead spots etc. people also reporting similar issues to Mazda, Volkswagen etc. since I used a Toyota car for last 7 years, I didn’t have any such issues and don’t have enough experience in other brands.
My question here is,
1. Do you suggest to buy this car?
2. Do you guys use/have used any of those models and faced such issue?
3. Any possibility to detect such problems before purchasing the car, such as RACV safety check/ mechanic check?

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

  • Diesel might not have the same issues

  • There's a one on Facebook you can joined called Fix our Focus and Fiesta (or something like that). Group of people initiating a class action against Ford.

As doc said above, diesel might not have the same issue, but if you find out it does, run to the hills.

I drove the Fiesta with the issue, the shuddering was definitely not fun, especially if turning through intersections.

    You should do this anyway

    • Is it really worth calling RACV to check the car? Do you guys do it?

If it is a private seller. You'd be very silly not to.

Even a dealer. If either says "No" then you know they have something to hide.

  • One of my friends at work has had big problems with this car. Gonna have to recommend avoid! (I think they were head problems though)

If the car has a dual clutch automatic known as the PowerShift (but usually referred to as the PowerShit), don't even consider buying the vehicle. The transmissions are lemons by design. Ford had to be dragged kicking and screaming to replace the faulty clutches. The seller knows why they are selling the car: PowerShit.

  • Thanks all for your advice. Appreciated all.
Decided to go for Toyota as I don’t want to take risk on this. I may spend lottle more than my budget, but a reliable car.

  • The dry clutch models (petrol) are to be avoided at all costs.
I think the diesel models use a wet clutch and are marginally better, but I would rather look for a different brand and avoid the problems.
Also most Ford dealers workshops behave like Nazi's when it comes to waranty issues.
Go buy a Japanese built car and save yourself a lot of problems.
Stay away from anything built in Europe as they cost lots to fix.

  • you are better off sticking with the 7 year old corolla which will give you problem free motoring for another 7 years.

Don’t know why you are asking the question. Youve done the research and it’s onoy going to be backed up by the folks on here. We don’t know anything more than the rest of the mob on the internet.

I suggest you buy the car, and then blame me when it all goes pear shaped.
