Want to buy an iPhone 8 and a Pixel 2. What's the cheapest way, with at least 5GB data on each?

Hi,

My wife and I are in the market for new phones. I'm with Optus (have 7 months to go on my current plan, and this is with an S7) and my wife's with Vaya.

We want an iPhone 8 and a Pixel 2.

There are 3 offers going on at the moment.

  1. Pixel 2 @59pm + lots of benefits from JB Hi-Fi
  2. iPhone 8 @59pm + 20GB data from Optus
  3. iPhone 8 @60pm + 16GB data + 300min international minutes + cashback from Virgin.

I was planning to upgrade my S7 (give it back) to the iPhone 8 on Optus and port the Vaya number to Telstra with the Pixel. I would have to pay $99 to upgrade the phone, but the cashback from Virgin would negate it.

But the issue is, to if I want to give back the S7, I have to upgrade the plan at the store. But the Optus deal is online only. :S

Other option is to terminate the Optus plan and choose JB Hi-Fi offer, then get the iPhone 8 on Virgin. I prefer the Virgin plan. And then try to sell the S7. I would have to pay 45 * 7 for the remaining phone repayments. I'm sure I can sell the phone and make up for those repayments, but I might have to wait for 3 months before I can do that, right? How soon can I legally sell the phone?

Have I missed anything? What other ways can I land a better deal?

Cheers

  • Go in to an optus store, they'll have plenty of stock for the iphone 8 and you can probably get it done on the day. Just give em a call.

    • Yes, but that offer is only available online. I went to a store yesterday. I don't know if I could have persuaded the agent to do it. I'm not very good at that. :(

      • Don't think you need to persuade them, they get paid on commission so they'd be more than happy to sign you up for a deal. Just give your local Optus store a call and ask if they can do the $59p/month plan

  • Optus plan is available at Harvery Norman so you just drop in if you are nearby.

    • How would it be any different from buying it online? The issue I have is the remaining 7 repayments (valued at $45pm) on my S7. That's $315 there. I would be saving $6pm going with this plan (65 vs 59), but still…
