Nissan Pulsar 2005 Won't Start - Started with Crankshaft Sensor Replacement

Any budding mechanics here?

So for a couple of months my car would suddenly stall randomly every once in 2-3 weeks and would start. But recently it started to happen more frequently and last weekend it suddenly stopped and won't start at all. When I made an attempt to start it would make a slight crank (half way through to complete start kind of start)

It's a Nissan Pulsar 2005 sedan. Ran the OBD scan and found the fault code P0335 Powertrain Crankshaft Position Sensor A circuit.

Fair enough, got the original crankshaft sensor from Nissan and replaced it (it was a pain) but after the replacement the start process even became smaller.

I am not sure what's the cause. I tried to jump start the car without any luck, but interestingly after doing the start process, becomes similar to before replacing the crankshaft.

Any suggestions? Do I have to replace the camshaft sensor as well? Do I have a dead battery (horn, lights work)?

  • Don't know much about Pulsars but have had a commodore do similar and have the crank angle sensor replaced etc but as it was done by a Holden service dept I had no further probs.

If you used the proper pulsar how to manual and followed all the steps you'd think you would be ok?

If you just ripped the old one off and put the new on without a guide then anythings possible?

Have you cleared the code then ran the scan again after replacement? No ignition fuse blown perhaps, the obd says A circuit implying there is a B circuit? I'd check the big ignition relays maybe they are under the bonnet or the fusible link.

If all else fails maybe a mobile mechanic will save hrs of frustration?

    Hope you get it happening

    • Any mobile mechanic you would recommend for western suburb of Melbourne ? Hows Acetune mobile mechanics?

  • Is the ignition timing out? Did you reset the timing after changing Crankshaft Position Sensor?

    • No i didn't set the ignition timing.. is this something i should be doing after replacing the crankshaft position sensor ?

      • Doubt it. The sensors just detect proximity of teeth on a wheel.

  • engine flooded

    • Yeah, maybe in 1983…

  • there are two sensors, one on the crankshaft and one somewhere else (sorry forget where). both sensors had the same design flaw. replace both. i had a nissan 2001 with the same problem. mine wasnt hard to start though it died suddenly while driving.

    • do you mean crankshaft and camshaft sensor? Do you mean both have to replaced if either is done? Mine was working perfectly fine until the last month or so.

      • Yeah, I think Nissan sell crankshaft & camshaft sensor as a kit, as both go around the same time. You don't have to replace both if one is working. There's vids on YouTube on how to test the sensor if you've got the time/patience.
Otoh an autoelectrican would prob fix it in half an hour. Nrma gives you one free tow.

  • +2

n14 pulsar one on top of the engine and one at the bottom just above the starter motor

    • do you mean crankshaft and camshaft sensor? Do you mean both have to replaced if either is done?

  • Consider perhaps starter motor has died.

  • so after having no luck whatsoever in my attempts of starting the car i called up the mobile mechanic. The guy came over , opened up the spark plugs > put a very small pinch of engine oil in the cylinders > hooked up portable jump starter plus cables to his own van > cranked for a minute or so and viola - the car started!

    What does this mean now?

    • Didn't you ask the mechanic? That's what you got him for?
Maybe the compression rings are buggered and the oil raised the compression till it fired? is it restarting regularly since?
