Need Help with WD Hard Drive Warranty

Bought it from JB Hi-Fi on 8/2/2015 from one of the deals posted here, drive died, so I took it back to JB and they tell me their system only does 12 month warranty and it's within ACCC's rules. However on the box it says 3 -year limited warranty. I have been building PC's and using hard drives since 2003 and all hard drives come with 3 year warranty. In fact warranty on some drives use to be 5 years. I paid in cash so can't even charge back.

I tried to open an RMA with WD but it says my drive is out of warranty lul. I tried to contact them here and I can't submit it because it's not accepting Australian phone number.

The drive is clearly under warranty till 8/2/2018 . I mean why state 3 years when its only 1 year.

What are my options here ?

I cant submit it because its not accepting Australian phone number..

    Have you tried "+614xxxxxxxx"?

    • https://imgur.com/a/CHEbH , this isn't real warranty tho because I did not but it on 24/10/2014. I bought it on 8/2/2015

      • yeah I tried 614 and 00614, just kept getting invalid phone number..

Can you register the product with that purchase date? Do you have the original invoice (assuming you do!)? You should be able to reset that date by registering the device

        • nop tried that too, because I tried to open an rma first and for that you need a registered product. I didn't even have an account with WD, so I had to make an account too lol.

Its weird JB wont accept because a few months ago I had a Seagate drive die which was around 2 yrs old and they offered me a refund since they didn't have any similar ones in stock.

        • @Spackbace: will it charge me international call rates ?

        • @Ryxxi:

Nope, that's a 1800 number (freecall - though not sure if it's free from mobiles)

Also says up the top "Not from Australia? Change country" which is the sign you're on the local page :)

        • @Spackbace: nice, this number is working will try to contact them.

        • @Ryxxi: They r closed now, only 9-5pm will try tomorrow.

        • @Ryxxi:

        • @Ryxxi: Use Skype… It will be like $0.50

Otherwise go back to JB and talk to a manager.

I think it's weird the WD website is showing no warranty,..

          Have you got a receipt?

        • @knick007:

Maybe WD work out the warranty based on manufactured date. Op need to find the receipt talk to WD again.

@knick007: yes, they fixed my warranty after showing them the invoice.

  • this page https://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/products-and-services/refund…

has a similar scenario as an example lol..

Go back to JB HiFi and ask again, and when they refuse, speak to a manager. Then grab the managers details and tell him you have no option but to post a horrible review on facebook and will be contacting the ACCC as their system is allowing them to breach the law. Then go online onto their facebook page and make a fuss…

I am also in Melbourne, and I don't mind going to JB HiFi for you as I am sick and tired of big businesses who should know3 better doing dodgy shit all the time. I am free all week, let me know and Ill pick it up and get some results..and video footage.

This is the true OZB spirit! Thumbs-up for you.

I look forward to watching the footage :-)

WOW so generous of you, thanks a lot. Trying to sort this out with WD first, they opened a case for me. Its taking some time tho.

      • I hope you get it sorted. I have dealt with WD and generally they will get you to send it back to their local office in Australia though because I purchased my drive from overseas I had to send it back to VIETNAM (though they got a courier to come collect it).

        • Lucky! They wanted me to send my drive (bought in Aus) to a very long address in Thailand :(. Wasn't worth my time/money in the end but I guess that's what they're aiming for.

        • @donnot: Same here, they want me to send it to Vietnam. Costs as much as the drive it self which was $90. What did you end up doing ?

        • I bought mine at JB, so weird they want me to send it to Vietnam. The girl told me that they don't have anything in Australia.

        • @Ryxxi:

Nothing, was only a notebook 1TB drive so I couldn't justify the postage cost.
