  • don't get the boot mount, they damage your duco…

Agree. Had one before myself. It uses rubber covered “hooks” to hang onto your car, but it’s too much stress for the connecting points with the weight of the bike(s) and this tends to chip your paint.

Only buy if you don’t care about your car paint.

  • Anybody with a carbon fibre framed bike be careful of any bike carrier that uses a clamp around the top tube of your bike. Better off having one of the carriers where your bike sits on its own wheels either on the tailgate or on roof bars.

    • is it ok if its not a "clamp" as such - but sits on the top-tube and is held down by rubbery straps? Is the issue applying the clamping force or supporting the bike by the top-tube?

Rubbery straps are fine, with carbon bike, unless going offroad - have used that type for many years.
Do suggest the type which supports wheels, when driving rough tracks.
Top tube type can have problem fitting some dual suspension MTB, if top tube is at steep angle.

        • Agree, danger is that you put force on the top tube and somehow damage the carbon. I am not sure what the limit is before you start damaging stuff so I find it best just to avoid. I only carry my roadbike on a roofrack mounted Thule carrier and I have carried my aluminium framed full suspension MTB on one of these but had the top tube angle problem amaroo mentioned, ended up with a scratch on the frame.

        • Bikes can be severely damaged when using a roofrack carrier.
          Mine wouldn't last a day.
Low branches. Underground carparks. Low bridges. My own garage door.

  • The boot mount carrier can be bought for $40 delivered from eBay. Obviously not branded, but it is the same thing. I can look through my ebay purchase history for it if anyone's interested.
