Nerf Rival Zeus - Legal or Not?

Nerf has a line of magazine fed ball shooters called the rival series. However these were not allowed into Australia as it did not "pass safety standards" (Google it or see website)

However I have noticed that amazon.com.au gumtree and ebay has them for for sale, some with highly inflated prices ($300 no thanks)

Could anyone shed some light on this if you know, I've always wanted one but dont want to get myself in potential trouble by buying a potentially illegal firearm!

Cheers

    It isn't a firearm.

Someone please think of the children!

It makes sense that if you were a boy and you played with toy guns then you will go on to murder women or commit sexual misconduct by causing awkward feelings though right?

      • So it's alright if you are a girl and played with toy guns then go on to murder women or commit sexual misconduct by causing awkward feelings? Or if you are a boy who identifies as a girl, or a girl that identifies as a boy?

      • Actually no, if you're a boy you're going to go on to commit those things already.

i just want to shoot people with foam balls. is that so much to ask.

    • Perhaps for the next ozbargain birthday party, we could have Nerf wars. Perhaps we'll send some invites to some well known retailers + influencers like Gerry Harvey so we can have a battle between customer and retailer.

      • I'm fairly sure that'll end in actual bloodshed.

Yes, to much of a personal question.

  • I've seen magazine and belt fed automatic nerf guns in Australia, I can't see why these would be banned.

Projectile velocity and mass: The mandatory standard prescribes requirements for the construction and maximum energy of a projectile toy.

      • Yeah I realised after reading through the article. We may end up with a watered down version.

To be precise, our toy laws dictate a maximum muzzle velocity of 50 fps (feet per second). That's exactly what "grey trigger" Nerf blasters sold in Australia shoot at (and sometimes the velocity is even lower). Overseas "orange trigger" Nerf blasters generally shoot around 60-70 fps, and the Rival series can go as high as 100 fps.

There are a few notable exceptions such as most of the Star Wars Nerf line, which shoots around 50 fps no matter where in the world you buy them.

Hasbro hasn't decided to make "grey trigger" variants of their Rival line, so that's why Rival blasters are not sold in Australia. Note that it's completely legal to buy them and get them shipped over here yourself for private use.

tldr version: The nanny state of Australia has nerfed Nerf blasters (literally).

      • Does it go to specificity of force/surface area of the projectile though?

  • i bought the Apollo version when i was in the States, but i haven't brought it into Australia (yet) and had the same question as you. i don't think Customs or the Police would know about and be targeting these items, but more so with Airsoft, perhaps?

but to answer your question, i think the ban was in place to stop the items from being available on the shelves here. i don't see information anywhere that it is illegal to own one at home.

As scrimshaw states, these must not pass the Australian standard to be sold as a toy.
So Nerf have no interest in bringing them into the country.
If you purchase one abroad for your own use (not to resell) you should be fine.

ok thanks for clarifying. not going to pay the $150 some people are asking for on gumtree, lets hope amazon comes through with its $60 models

    • There's a lot of Nerf gear listed on Amazon AU at great prices but with the "out of stock" indicator at the moment — it's not clear whether these are just dummy inventory placeholders or whether Amazon AU really will sell at these prices. Note the product pictures showing orange triggers, which would mean these are overseas Nerf blaster models.

Here's hoping this will be a reality, so the scalpers and their ridiculous prices can rack off. It's about time Aussies got a decent deal.
