Harvey Norman - Online Purchase Exchange of Goods (Note 8) - Potentially Dud Battery

Hi all,

Did plenty of research over the last few months and pulled the trigger on a Note 8 during the Harvey Norman Online Sale. I purchased it online and picked it up at a store.

I have noticed from reviews that people are saying the battery life on this phone should last me all day.

Regarding the Note 8 battery life, in many of the reviews online, I have noted that people are getting 4-5 hours of screen on time and usage, however, I have noticed that I run down to 75-80% after less than an hour of use (Screen on time).

I am currently at 1.5 hours of screen on time and sitting at 60%, which is what I have noted daily (2 weeks of usage). Now extrapolating this over the entire day leads me to 3.5 hours of screen on time and use at max.

My settings are as follows:
1) WIFI OFF (always on feature is also turned off) – only have WIFI on at home
2) 4G on (reception is not an issue)
3) Black AMOLED Background – should save battery
4) No Gaming
5) I use Whatsapp / Facebook / Messenger App
6) Have Tinder / Bumble / Snapchat
7) Battery Saving mode on - Medium
8) Listen to Spotify on my commute to work (offline playlist)
9) Location Services On (but set to only in use for apps while using the app)
10) Sync Off

My typical usage is browsing news articles on chrome, some facebook, messenger to keep in touch with mates in the morning and afternoon.

Do I have a DUD Battery or am I classified as heavy user?

Additionally, if this is the case, anyone have any experience with requesting a replacement (exchange) (not a refund) from Harvey Norman Online Store? Do I go back to the store I picked up my phone from to request an exchange?

Thanks in advance

  • Can you turn screen resolution down a setting to see if that makes a difference

Despite what scrimshaw said I think another 2-3 days isn't gonna make a difference if you've already been using it daily for 2 weeks.

Your usage doesn't sound particularly heavy to me either. I have heard snapchat has some horrific battery drain as does facebook so maybe one of those is the culprit?

Might be worthwhile getting an app like gsam battery monitor that can give you a good breakdown of what's draining the battery during the day

    • my bad, I initially thought his note 8 was brand new. If already more than a week, then ignore my first comment

  • Holy shit turn off Messenger and Facebook app when you're not using it. Those drain power like a housewife with her husband's Amex.
They had to tweak the app for iOS because they were so taxing.

Turn down the brightness too. The Super AMOLED is bootiful but power hungry at 75%+ brightness.
The S7 edge had the perfect sized battery (3600 mAH) and right size screen imo. Doubt we will ever see a battery with that kind of capacity from Sammy. They might move to a new technology or make their phones fatter.

  • Just get in the habit of turning off your apps
i get through the whole day on my S8 and when I get home i have about 15% left

    Note that i use
    -Facebook
    -Whatsapp / kakaotalk
-graphic intense game for about an hour
    -general browsing over the day

    I have
    -Location off
    -Wifi ON / 4G ON
    -screen brightness 85%
    -WQHD Resolution
    -not using battery saving whatsoever

your phone sounds fine and even if you go to the store they will not help you and if you insist they will send it to Samsung for assessment which will come back with no faults after a 1-2 weeks and you'd have wasted your time.

    :)
-Sync on for 5 emails / no sync for media

From the above comments and my knowledge of phones (take from that what you will) I suspect something is wonky with the battery. Still put any battery monitoring app on it and double check nothing is chewing battery and or running the phone at max output 24/7.
