What I’m wondering is which Qantas flights are we able to apply for the business class upgrade?
Does the economy flight need to be purchased through Qantas website or can we purchase any Qantas economy flight anywhere in case we see it on special?
If you mean that red e-deal, I'm pretty sure you can upgrade. It just costs a lot more
your economy ticket needs to be under the flexi category and the availability of upgrades is quite limited
you can only put in a request and the upgrades are given according to the pecking order of their membership tiers.
you usually don't find out until the last few days(?) whether you request is successful.
quite a risky move if you ask me, don't bother if you have a bronze membership. :/
Yes totally understand the chances aren’t great but hoping some flights like Sydney to Manila aren’t very popular with Qantas so may have a higher chance.
How do I find out if the ticket I buy is a flexi category ticket? For example, tickets from IWTF, does it say anywhere during purchase what type of ticket it would be?
yeah, maybe more chances with less popular routes.
sorry, i never look that deep into IWTF, i always end up doing an actual search alongside on the Qantas website, then you can see the prices and categories. you can also see the ticket classes (denoted by certain letters) grouped together, maybe IWTF will have the letter classes on their website instead?

Fares in the E, N, O, P, Q class cannot be upgraded using points. These are discount economy fares which can include Red e-Deal fares as well as Points Plus Pay fares.
Never used IWTF so not sure where you can see what fare class you're booking into. I assume there will be a detail somewhere to look at it.
Save up for a RTW business class award - 280k points or redeem for flights on AA (way lower taxes/fees)
to what I believe, as long as your economy fare is not in a discounted fare type, you should be able to upgrade
