Officeworks have this deal listed @ $550 but being a clearance item you many not be able to find stock. Or if they will price-match this web deal.

Get another $50 off by registering here (coupon is emailed instantly): http://www.binglee.com.au/50voucher/

    • Minimum spend for the coupon is $500, so you need to order something else as well but it's still a good idea.

      • I saw that the coupon has a $500 minimum spend, but it seems to apply fine in my cart despite the total being $499. (I'm not going to buy, though, so maybe someone could confirm if it works without needing to buy something else.)

FYI Reviewed by Ken Rockwell as the WORST DSLR ever made by Nikon, http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d3000.htm

    • Yep I agree - would rather spend the extra cash and get the D5000 twin lens kit.

But I suppose the D3000 plus 18-55 lens is still technically a good deal given what you would normally pay.

It is an entry level camera. The problems pointed out by Ken Rockwell would not matter to a beginner DSLR user.

    • His review, in brief:

"The D40 was a better camera, but it's no longer available."
"I hate to say it, but the D5000 is a much better camera. I'd get it instead."
"As of November 2010, the D5000 seems to have been discontinued.
"The new Nikon D7000 is much, much better."

So in the end, he basically suggests you get a ~$1,700 camera instead. :)

The lens is excellent (according to the review). Everything else is nitpicking around the edges. A pro wouldn't even sneeze at a $500 DSLR, while someone like a beginner to lower-intermediate photographer is likely to find the D3000 a real bargain for just $500.

Some really poor digital point-and-click cameras are on sale for as much as $200. This looks like a bargain by comparison.

  • thx for the comments guys.

atm, i've just got a point'n'shoot…and thinking of getting my first DSLR.

so far, still not sure whether getting something entry-level like this for $500 will be fine, or whether i go bananas and fork out $1,700 for a D7000.

obviously you get what you pay for, but would a beginner actually notice or use the extra ~$1,200 worth of features & quality of the D7000?

    • The 18-55 VR lens included in the price is a good quality lens despite its low price. In the future you can buy just a new Nikon DSLR camera body without a lens and reuse your existing lens.

I have a Nikon D70 that I purchased in 2004. It serves me well, but if it broke down I'd seriously consider a D3000 over a more expensive camera. The $500 to $1000 saved by not buying a better camera body can be invested in a really nice lens.

    • Having a heavy camera to lug around can actually put a damper on your photography. Think of what kind of situations you will be taking your photos in. If you want portability yet want detailed photos, prosumer cameras can give you very good quality without the weight.

Megapixels isn't everything. I have an old 5Mpx prosumer that takes better photos than the 10Mpx snappy cameras of today. Reason is the lens.

  • i guess, as beginner you get entry level dslr (well you are also an entry level to the dsl world, so get something to match it) then once you get better, get better camera. at that time ,the better camera will cost you less..
my point is, why would u want to learn with expensive toy? u might break it or cant release its fully capabilities anyway (with your current skill)

try pentax k-x also.. comes in colours!!!

  • Agree with the other posters - what do you expect from a sub-$500 dSLR? Keep in mind that the Ken Rockwell review is based on its RRP… in terms of value-for-money, this is a pretty great deal.

  • cluster, erwinsie…thx for the feedback!
heading overseas nex March, hoping to pick something up by then.

yeah, not the best idea lugging around a D7000 when i wouldn't know how to best use it, nor have too much experience in caring for/handling DSLRs.

btw…would a D90 be overkill? i've got a mate who has one and reckons I should try and pick one of those.
haven't looked too deeply into where you can get the cheapest prices, but they were roughly around the $750 mark?

    • Just ordered a D90 myself yesterday with an 18-105mm lens. ~$1000 from citiwide.
Has a few advantages over the D5000 such as a much higher res screen and has an inbody motor, so theres a chance to pick up older lenses on the cheap and they'll work fine.

I think the D7000 is overkill for a beginner, its a prosumer level camera and still at a high price since its so new.

      • becareful, according to my research also mate's research, prices in hongkong is not cheaper for OLD models.. for new models, yes.
for example, i just cameback from HK and i saw prices for pentax KX is WAY MORE than what i got in sydney few months ago!!
plus, if u buy here, u get aust warranty (again do your research, some says pentax canon nikon dont do overseas warranty for CAMERA (yes for lenses)!
and you can claim 10% gst if you go overseas.

for example, K-X kit now in sydney is around $600, less gst would be 550$ mark, and thats incredibly cheap.

        • canons especially, but also Nikons are quite overpriced in aus, the equiv of my $1000 purchase at JB was $1400 after their 15% discount. Local warranty isn't worth $400 to me.

  • Out of stock now.

  • What about D3100? Can get a twin lens kit for $1100 at The good guys. Is it cheap? I am new to dSLR too.

  • Great price. This combo worth $525 in Hong Kong.
