you can buy and build the same specs for a lot cheaper during these xmas sales. i have very similar gear except 16gb ram and 1700 instead of 1700x, and it only costed $1.1 AUD (minus the 1TB HDD, sd card reader, bluetooth) like 3 months ago when shit was much more expensive. they werent the crappy brands either (aorus gpu, asrock mb, corsair ram, samsung ssd) and building it wasnt difficult alongside a youtube video

    • +8

You don't say? Most goods and services can be built or created yourself for cheaper, but that's not convenient.

      • +2

Plus the warranty is easier for the Dell system, Building it yourself you have to manually test the faulty component and send it away…

    • I actually got a 16GB version for around the same price from eBay Dell during a sale and coupon. Just need patience to wait for it to happen or Boxing Day sales may be a possibility.

    • +5

The vr head sets or mixed reality whatever they want to call it is $800 .
I fail to see how this isnt a better deal than your pc. At least on par
Even if you get oculus on sale right now its still mid to late $500.

    • +1

WOW! Only a dollar ten? That's insane.

    • are you a wizard?

      • when people are clearly still buying these overpriced PC's, then yes, i am a wizard

  • I wouldn't touch anything Dell. https://www.productreview.com.au/p/dell-australia.html

Getting them to honour Australian warranty can be impossible if they arbitrarily decide not to.

Probably the best warranty support I've dealt with, much better than HP and ASUS at least..

      • +1

Agreed I used to provide I.t support for Dell's for the local government. Next business day onsite repairs!! Even when working at JB I would see them out the back fixing them very impressive, some brands like Hp need to be sent to Sydney/Melbourne for repairs…

        • I don't think that's a fair comparison as the government/businesses usually have Dell's ProSupport which is far more streamlined then the warranty on a retail product like this.

        • @Lorindor: ok well the retail inspiron 5000's were getting serviced onsite at jb with no next business day agreement..

        • @solidussnake:

I'd be surprised if JB Hi-Fi didn't have NBD support on all of their Dell machines.

        • @Lorindor: even on their standard basic retail machines ?? I know the xps standard have nbd if purchased through jb or dell..

        • @solidussnake:

Are you referring to machines that JB sell or use for their business?

        • @Lorindor: the ones jb sell like the inspiron 5000/7000 series.

          @solidussnake:

Ah I see, that makes more sense.

I find their current customer service second to none, the past it was woeful, now they seem to have vastly improved!.

    • +1

My experience with Dell was always ok, if not great

    • +2

Disagree, my experience with Dell's warranty service has been exemplary.

    • +3

I had next business day warranty on an XPS back in 2013 and they would always show up, on time, 40KM out of the CBD at my house without fail. Probably the best warranty service I've ever had.

    • I've always had great experiences with Dell as far as warranties go.

    • I agree.

After what I went through with a similar PC, I'm not going to touch their products again.

I cant believe at the end of 2017 a 'gaming desktop' can only have 8Gb of RAM. I built a rig in mid 2012 and it has 32Gb of RAM.

While it has a fairly decent graphics card, you would expect 16Gb minimum in a gaming rig.

    • +6

8gb is the minimum memory required, 32gb is just overkill for a gaming rig.

    • +4

thats cause memory prices have almost quadrupled since then.

    • +4

Tests from a few years ago showed that more than 8gb of ram made little difference to system and gaming performance, and that money was better spent elsewhere.

With the recent spike in ram prices, I think 8gb is quite appropriate for a mid range build. More than 16 seems to be overkill unless you specifically do ram-intensive work like CAD.

    • Ram is damm expensive right now. It cost me almost $500 for 32gb of ram in my rig I built a month back.

    • The biggest problem with the RAM in the Dell Ryzen build is that it is 2400MHz. Ryzen benefits from fast RAM and a decent build should be aiming for 3000MHz or 3200MHz

    • What are you needing more than 8gb of ram for games ????? I have a 1080 with 8gb of ram most it uses is 3-5gb running at qhd with ultra settings… 16gb of ram is more important for photoshop/video editing or running multiple virtual desktops…

which vr should i get out of dell, lenovo, HP? i am new to VR so i have no idea at all.

  • If anyone buys this and is happy with a Ryzen 5 1600X,
I'm happy to swap my 1-month-old Ryzen 5 (Got it from a recent Dell deal) + $120 cash for this Ryzen 7 1700X CPU ;)

    • +2

Yeah I'm don't think someone is going to void their warranty just so you can get a good deal on upgrading your CPU.

      • neither do I, but one can dream ;)

  • Please let me know if anyone is interested in the VR headset… Just need the desktop only

    • would like to sell it for $500, please reply if interested, the 5% off code expires tonight.

    Thanks OP, just purchased it.
With the added RACQ 6% off gift card offer it worked out to be a great price.
Next stop, find two decent monitors to replace my 7 year old 21 inch one…

    • Hi mate,

Could you please let me know if the SSD is PCle?

And if there is a liquid cooler system.

      Many thanks!

      • Still sitting there unpacked. Been flat out with work.
Will have a check tomorrow and let you know

        • Thanks a lot!
