Feral War Hog American IPA & Pirate Life IPA Cans $32 / 8 Pack @ BWS

220

I was browsing the BWS website looking for beer specials and stumbled upon some decent deals for beer that is at the higher end of the price / ABV scale. These are part of the current "create your own 8 pack" craft beer deal that is running at BWS.

Feral War Hog American IPA (7.5% ABV) usual prices: single can $7.30 / 4 pack $24 / 24 pack $110
Pirate Life IPA (6.8% ABV) usual prices: single can $6.50 / 6 pack $30 / 24 pack $99

This 8 pack offer means that the price per can is now cheaper than the 24 pack price. Dan Murphy's prices are slightly cheaper than BWS for the 24 packs ($104.99 for Feral and $94.99 for Pirate Life) so if you want to buy 24 Pirate Life IPAs then the DM price is just slightly better by about 4c a can. Most other beers offered as part of the sale are a lot cheaper for a single / 6 pack so the deal doesn't really offer great savings and the appeal is more the flexibility to pick and choose 8 different beers.

  • That makes it $96 for a slab (24) … Not cheap for beer …even for ipa.

    • You'll see that I've included the 24 pack slab prices in the description and both beers are more expensive than $96 per slab from BWS.

Whether you think that's expensive for an IPA really depends on what other IPAs you're comparing them with as there are so many different types with wildly varying alcohol content.

You are paying a $1 a can in excise tax alone due to the high ABV.

Good deals on high value products are still good deals. A steep discount on a fine wine should be acceptable because it's out of the price range of a lot of people normally - why are fine ales any different?

  • No idea what it tastes like but in principal "feral war Hog" is a great name for a beer!

    • +3

Depends on your taste, but I rate both the War Hog and the Pirate Life beers among the best of the highly hopped beers in australia.

      • Agree completely. Someone told me Pirate Life got bought out recently. Might be the last chance to try them while still an independent brewer (assuming quality has remained consistent).

        • +1

Bought by AB InBev I think. The lads will probably remain in charge of the brewing, so you can probably just look forward to seeing more availability and maybe less cost.

        • @davowade: Hope so. The cost is pretty overwhelming, especially for stuff like Mosaic, the stout and the IIPA. Can’t believe I pay $45 a 4-pack sometimes when I feel like treating myself…

        • @Meconium: Excuse me? $45 for 4 of the same beer? Surely you're meaning 4 different craft bottles…

        • @davowade: Yeah I usually mix it up, but I like the Mosaic so would get one stout, one IIPA and two Mosaics, but still $45 for four 500mL cans is a lot! (Cheaper than $13 each though…)

        • +1

@Meconium: I bought a few nice beers from my local, and the total came to $70. But the Moon dog 'jumping the shark' was $35 by itself. I'm a lot more careful now, and I fib to my wife about how much my beers are.

        • @davowade: Had the Moon Dog lager last month from Dans, was pretty good. Have you ever had any of Bacchus Brewing's creations? Raspberry and white chocolate pilsener, peanut butter pale ale… these taste exactly like they say they will! The guy is a long-time home brewer and used to own a home brew shop in Brisbane before turning it into a brewery. Worth a try if you can find it!

        • +1

@Meconium: Had the raspberry white chocolate at the GABS festival a few years back, tasted like a vanilla raspberry cornetto. Amazing stuff. Are you sign up on untappd?

        • +1

@davowade: A 4 pack of Modus Operandi Former Tenant Red IPA is usually around that mark (although 500mL cans @ 7.8% might explain that).

I've got a few bottles of Kereru Night Spirit Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout in the pantry for future winters. From memory they were about $35 a bottle, but so good. Love their Resonator IPA & Imperial Nibs Porter too.

        • @Nomadesque: I don't see too much Kereru around, what city are you in? Plus the former tennant is worth every cent. I went to Sydney recently and made a trip to the brewery especially to get in the 1 litre can.

        • +1

@davowade: I live in Canberra and there are a couple of places that stock it from time to time (Page Bottler & Plonk). Kereru was at last year's Canberra Beer Fest so I stocked up with a couple of boxes then too.

        • @Nomadesque: Page Bottler is a revolving door of excellent beer. Plonk has some nice imports but doesn't impress me as much as it used to. I think they try to satisfy the various ethnic groups of the area by stocking lagers from southern Europe instead of great Australian beers. Their selection of European and North American longnecks is still impressive though, if a bit spendy.

        • Yes, they were bought out. Feral was also bought out earlier this year.

Cheers, good prices for these beers, paid $32 for a 6 pack of Pirate Life IPA recently at my local

So sad that this is now a choice between which multinational you want to give your money to -
Coca-Cola Amatil or AB InBev :(

Still both good beers though, at least for now. Pirate Life is my pick.

    • +1

Geez - didn't read that Pirate Life had been snapped up. Hoping they do a Sierra Nevada in terms of scaling up without sacrificing quality.

Both these beers are superb - can't go wrong with either.

      Porque no los dos?

If I can get these beers at a good price I buy them. Darwin is shocking for anything that doesn't come from a mega brewer so I have to deal with what's available. The fact that I can even get Pirate Life, Feral & Modus Operandi here is incredible considering that wasn't the case a couple of years back.

When I'm home in Canberra I buy locally produced stuff like Bentspoke, independently owned US brews like Sierra Nevada and plenty of other small craft brewers which far outnumber the previously independent craft brewers that have sold out to multinationals.

      • +1

The craft beer renaissance has passed its zenith unfortunately. Soon our beers will all be like Yenda or Fat Yak - with a label suggesting independence, but betrayed by the insipid flavour of corporate standardisation and cost-cutting.

Who knows if even the likes of BentSpoke may follow one day?

War Hog is a really solid IPA, especially with that ABV and at $16 a 4 pack. Only problem is no BWS stores near me stocking it.. or even not near me, from what I can tell

    • Just did a quick search around Australia and had trouble locating any stock in NSW, VIC, QLD or TAS.

Major centres in WA, SA, NT & ACT all seem to have stock.

Go to Dan's and Price Match.
If they arent too cluey on the deal you can take any of the Craft Beers and match them into this deal.
Ended up with 8x Pirate Life IIPA 500ml Cans ($13 each) + a mix of War Hogs/Sierra Nevada Torpedos for $64 then minus the 10% for the Dans Mix and Match hahaha..

    • Haha good job! No Dan Murphy's in Darwin so unfortunately I can't give it a go. The store you went to must have incredibly dim staff if they were willing to do PL IIPA for $4 a can without checking whether BWS were offering the same.

      • What do you think of 6tank brewery or even one mile?
        Im from Darwin too.

        • I've only been to Six Tanks once and didn't try any of their beers as none of the styles that were available at the time really appealed to me. They had Stockade 8 Bit on tap for a decent price and I found it hard to go past that!

I've had the 4:21 Kolsch and RDO Bright Ale from One Mile a few times and I think they're OK. Would like to try their No Limits IPA some time but I've never seen it on tap anywhere. I think the weather conditions up here really aren't the best for beer brewing as the temperature's just too high all year round and I'm sure running cool rooms to create an ideal environment would mean that it'd be too expensive to produce.

        • @Nomadesque: I had some craft beers in the Philippines two weeks ago. They kind of sucked, and I'm sure it's because both the grains and the hops (and who knows, even the water) have been imported from more climatically favourable regions. Imagine Darwin's the same. Funny that the highest per capita beer drinking city in the world isn't a major beer producer!

      • The Pirate Life IIPA is pretty full on! Tastes like a barleywine or a tripel. A bit excessive for me, and I can't even imagine drinking it in the tropical wet!

      • Its listed as "any 8 craft beers for $32" so if they just look at the poster or the website they will do it.
The fine print is below 375ml etc. etc.

Which still gives you a way better selection at dans vs BWS anyway

        Same company overall

    • Which DM was this?

    • Nice. Last time BWS did a craft beer deal, Dan's staff knew that it was just domestic beers at a standard size. Was still a good deal though, 8 for $30.

The War Hog is one awesome beer. Tasted from a can and was fortunate to try it from the tap when we were at Swan Valley. Can't go wrong if you like hoppy beers!

Nice deal. These beers are awesome.

  • I am really enjoying the 8 pack deal. I have been getting the Balter IPA 4 packs and they are really good. And don't forget the free bag.
