  • Thanks! Got 1 each of Ardbeg and Talisker. If I hadn't been spending so much money recently I'd stock up on more.

Is it generally well accepted that whiskey/single malt prices have gone up considerably over the past few years?

    • Well maybe with inflation. Looking through previous posts it's maybe a few dollars more now

  • Not the best ever but definitely the cheapest prices at the moment.

Some great prices on the classics if you search in the provided eBay search link 'single whisky', set your price range, sort from most to least and then price check on Boozle to make sure you're getting a good deal after the 20% is applied.

Laphroaig 10. Bought once. And that will be the last time.

Absolutely! I've tried several of their more expensive drops - quite impressed!

      As for the 10yo: Eeerk!

[Anyone in the market for 90% of a bottle Laphroaig 10yo and 'living' in Canberra, let me know. Almost tempted to pay someone to take it away. Can I use it as paint stripper? Certainly works on my throat. :-(

      • I found the 10 to be better than their more expensive ones. Even the triple wood and cask strength.

      • I'd pay postage for Brisbane :)

      • hahaha. PM'ed!

        • …and gone to the man who picked it up today. Thanks for the bottle of shiraz in return!

        • @lostincanberra: my pleasure mate! Ozbargain is a funny old place

Each to their own. The 10 y.o is one of my favourites (and I've tried much more expensive ones). It does tend to be a love it or hate it kind of drop though.

      • I agree. I missed adding "YMMV" in my post.

I shared the bottle with 4 long time buddies* and none of us liked the Laphroaig 10. We almost had to ditch it halfway. It kinda burns — tastes kinda like kerosene (sorry to be blunt).

        • You have had kerosene before?

        • Eh, no need to apologise. The world would be a boring place if everyone liked the same things.

You are not alone in your thoughts on Laphroaig:

          https://www.acespirits.com/laphroaig-distillery-information-…

During the prohibition period in the U.S., Laphroaig was the only whisky legally imported into the country. Apparently, due to the distinct smell of iodine characteristic of the spirit, customs officials could easily be persuaded that the liquid was in fact medicinal. Since then, the distillery has continued to prosper, and is currently the best-selling Islay whisky.

      Not everyone likes peat…

      • +1

True. I do quite like it - but I find it out of balance in the Laphroaig 10yo. I don't get kerosene - more the bituminous character associated with deck quoits. Anyone remember those?

I find Talisker more to my taste - had the 10 not long ago (Jazz venue in Berlin!) and it went down very well. Plenty of character at a not unreasonable price.

    • One of the few common single malts I am happy to add a dash of water to, to try and tone down the peatiness and open it up a bit.
