I'm New and Need Help with My Site

Hi all,

I'm new here but have been on OzBargain for years. Just a bit about myself, i'm from Adelaide and I am programmer. I have 10 years experience but i never consider myself a senior as I'm constantly learning. I mainly worked in large organisations and only ever been exposed to enterprise or proprietary applications. For the past year I have been wanting to learn new stuff so I went online and pick the popular frameworks/languages to learn (nodejs/angular) and using AWS for hosting.

8 months later, I've created this https://dishitup.com.au

I like to gain some constructive feedback, improvements, and even marketing strategies to actually get people to sign up.

I know i still have lots to learn. I am also allowing partnership to help me through marketing, so let me know if you think you can help me kick this site off and get at least a some people who are interested to join.

I am at the moment also creating iOS and Android application. My intention is always about learning from start to finish and have certainly gained a huge amount of knowledge. Monetising this app is really just about covering cost I guess.

Thanks in advance.

LOL, I read the domain as di shit up and was trying to work out what on earth it could be until I clicked…

Not the only one. I'm wondering why I want even one shitup, let alone two.

Constructive feedback: change the site name. di-shit-up will be seen by plenty of users.

  • I am willing to bet that domain was on purpose. I like it!

  • OP, as well as puerile comments ;) you could well run in to some Scunthorpe Problem issues with the domain.

  • Yes, it was meant to be a bit of fun when coming up with the name too. We are well aware. When there is a modal popup (exclamation or error) - it has a title "What's dishit?" - it also makes people remember the site name I guess.

  • Just out of curiosity who is liable in the event of food poisoning?
I'm no legal experts but would it be at all possible for one poor soul to sell a homemade satay for, say a $15 profit only to be hit wih a $1-mil damage liability because the buyer forgot to state his/her peanut allergy?
I had a skim through the Food Safety tab and it's just general advise like wash your hands, use clean water etc.

    • We thought about this one quite a bit. We can't control what other people cook, so as part of the terms and conditions, it would be both the buyer and seller to ensure they know what they buying/selling. We only provide a platform for everyone to use.
When filling up the forms on our site, it's the cook's responsibility to provide as much information as possible - so we have templates/tick boxes to say what allergens etc. When viewing the dish, it would show these details.

All dishes submitted will be reviewed by admins to ensure there is enough details about the dish.

  • Well done on being humble, but do be realistic that many companies invest millions in creating a user base. Amazon lost billions over many years establishing their brand over loss making years. Online bookmaker Tom Waterhouse might never have made a profit before being sold to a large player…they invested a certain amount as a loss leader in the hope of a future business or an exit plan. Has Youtube ever made a profit? Who knows, but probably not. It's quite rare for IT companies to just go viral. Maybe crossy roads and a few games, sometimes good timing like the mobile rush, but most sites involving regular users require losses in the early years. Trying to recover your break even losses isn't really how things work.

    • Thank you.

Yes I understand this too. At the moment, my loss is only my time but the time spent is learning and that is the ultimate gain. If this don't work out, I will make this open source so everyone can use it as a template. It is a good platform that we written from scratch, and we are one of a few we know of who don't have the millions of dollars to have an application that can handle split-payments.

  • I'd look at your website carefully running it through responsinator I see esp on iPhone 5 the headline text (what is etc)not displaying fully in the view port forcing a scroll.

By moving that closer up to the search panel you save scrolling, I'd prefer to see smaller text for that piece just one size down to give you more real estate, try shifting the search bar above every thing also.

    • We have had a bit of trouble with iphone5 sizes. We designed with iphone6 size in mind but thanks for this, I'll make a note of it.

  • The website looks good. Two suggestions:
    1. The website is too long to scroll. It would be good to have button- Go To Top
    2. Once we are in middle of page, the top menu is not visible. It would be good to be visible at any point of scrolling.

from a former chef i think this an awesome concept.

my only concern is that the general public may not be aware of certain hygienic or HAACP practices.

as you have mentioned cross contamination is very common in household kitchens
