How to Make Mt Franklin Flavoured Sparkling Water?

In true ozbargain spirit I’d like to make flavoured sparkling water at home and stop the wife from wasting so much money.
Does anyone know where to buy the sugarless flavours that Mt Franklin uses in their ‘lightly sparkling flavoured water’ range?
I’ll use a soda stream for the bubbles but I think all of the soda stream flavours are sugary syrups. I’m looking for the non-sugar flavours only.

    artificial sweeteners cause cancer

    • Debunked.

Same as: Salt causes high blood pressure, and a couple of other things I forgot, but which I'd assumed was common medical knowledge.

      • +3

Except that the association between dietary salt and blood pressure is NOT a myth.

There is some individual variance, but adults consuming more than 6 g of salt per day are increasing their risk of hypertension and heart disease.

The actual myths around salt (which are definitely not what you are implying) are summarised here:

        https://www.heartfoundation.org.au/news/9-salt-myths-busted

        • +1

Yes - they are still falling for the myth which arose out of a flawed and never-replicated study from decades ago. Here's the latest study on the subject:

          Article: http://time.com/3313332/salt-and-blood-pressure/

          Study: https://academic.oup.com/ajh/article/28/3/362/2743418

Results & Conclusion (SBP = Systolic blood pressure):

          RESULTS
SBP was higher in participants with elevated body mass indices (BMIs). Salt intake was positively associated with SBP in men but not in women. The negative relationship between consumption of fruits and vegetables and SBP was significant in both sexes. Alcohol intake was positively associated with SBP in both sexes; physical activity was not. The 5 parameters representing the well-accepted modifiable factors for hypertension reduction plus age and education level, accounted for 19.7% of the SBP variance in women and 12.8% in men. Considering their squared partial correlation coefficient, age and BMI were the most important parameters relating to SBP level. Salt intake was not associated with SBP in either sex after multiple adjustments.

          CONCLUSIONS
BMI was the main contributory modifiable factor of BP level after multiple adjustments.

It's a classic case of correlation is not causation - salt correlates with high blood pressure, only because high salt intake are correlated with other actual contributing factors (i.e. BMI and not eating fruits and vegetables) to high blood pressure, and not because salt itself causes high blood pressure.

https://www.google.com.au/search?q=artificial+sweeteners+cau… <— read and no clear evidence. But sugar can cause more issues than what artificial sweeteners can cause.

    • Mt Franklin doesn't contain artificial sweeteners.

    • Getting your news from Facebook also causes cancer.

  • -1

Yeah same as Smoking doesn't cause cancer, last time I looked most artificial sweeteners are classified as carcinogens which says cancer forming?

The cancer council of Australia in this report which is a verbatim report from America concludes there is no risk, but would you believe the US food and drug administration are honest, like saying Malcolm Turnbull is an honest politician hee hee

You use what ever you want its your family, your body etc

Me I'll stick to small amts of sugar

    • +1

      https://www.cancercouncil.com.au/86047/cancer-information/ge…

Artificial sweeteners are used to replace sugar in food and drinks. There are a variety of artificial sweeteners available, including saccharin, aspartame and cyclamate.

While there is evidence to link high-dose artificial sweetener use with cancer in animals, there is no evidence to support such a link in humans.

And before you get into a tizzy about "But it does in animals!" here's a few more points:

it has been determined that the increase in bladder cancer risk in rats is due to the physiology of the rat urinary system.

      And

Subsequently, the National Cancer Institute examined data from the Diet and Health Study of more than half a million retirees and found that increasing consumption of aspartame-containing beverages was not associated with the development of cancer.

      And

According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), there is insufficient evidence to conclude that cyclamates cause cancer in either humans or animals.

I mean, yes you can believe what you want to believe, but there's only one version of the facts.

As I said you do what you want to do, I do not believe US or Aust Cancer councils reports as they can be fabricated and meaningless.

No need to turn it into a pissing contest because you need to win or show you can google so called true reports. Let it go have a cup of non cancer forming sweetener and wash it down with a cup of salt for good measure

I do not believe US or Aust Cancer councils reports

That's great and all, and I'd be happy to point to the primary sources (the scientific studies) that back up those reports.

But if you don't believe those either… what do you believe? Are you Stephen Colbert, because your approach seems to be:

That's where the truth lies, right down here in the gut. Do you know you have more nerve endings in your gut than you have in your head? You can look it up. I know some of you are going to say "I did look it up, and that's not true." That's 'cause you looked it up in a book. Next time, look it up in your gut. I did. My gut tells me that's how our nervous system works.

        • +1

And I don't believe peoples theories without any clear evidence.
Based on your theory, anything can cause cancer :)

last time I looked most artificial sweeteners are classified as carcinogens which says cancer forming?

You should look again, EVERYTHING is on the big list o' stuff that causes cancer (or might not, we'll add it just to be safe).

You should also be avoiding tea, coffee, pickles, wine, BBQ, pork, red meat and beer as ALL of those are known to be carcinogens.

Sweeteners are on the "no but add them away" list that also includes Wifi and aloe vera.

But yeah, the Fw. Fw. Fw. Fw. FW. FW. OMG email you just got…

ANyway back on topic…. as previous use fruit to flavour the soda water, also note that Mt Franklin water has very high sodium levels.

If you already have a soda stream and want to save more money get one of these. https://www.countrybrewer.com.au/products/FreedomOne-Sodastr… it will allow you to buy a CO2 bottle from your local Brewer supplies shop (I paid $260.00) they are over 10 x the capacity of the soda stream bottles and only cost $30.00 to swap for a full one.

I flavour my soda water with fresh lime / lemon juice or if I run out the lemon juice you can buy in bottles from the supermarkets. Or I use flavoured teas bags lots of fruit varietys - buy when they come on special.

    • I use juice too - the cheap bottled variety from supermarket is 99% as good in min water and very convenient
I had not thought to use flavoured teas however
You could steep in hot water and then boil it down a little to make like a concentrate as well
      Great idea

      • I don't own a soda stream but I am just wondering ifs possible to refrigerate a fruit tea overnight and then put in soda stream? Currently I just steep a tea bag in soda water, it gives a very mild flavour.

        • +2

Soda stream works best on just water, then adding flavour. Trying to carbonate already flavoured water can lead to a fizzy mess.

  • +3

Place slices of cucumber/lemon etc in water overnight in the fridge 1-2 days then add to the soda stream

  • For those without a sodastream - I regularly buy the mineral water from Aldi - 69 cents a litre I think
Dash of lemon juice or sugar free cordial and the whole thing is way under $1/litre
I find the Aldi equally as bubbly but less minerally and tart as the Mt Franklin
They also do 12 packs of lightly sparkling 600ml bottle but they are similar in price to the 1l
We buy a few for taking to parties where it's nice to have individual serves
Only downside is the waste generated by the plastic bottles I guess
