I have 5x$30 Optus prepaid sims. Can I port my number to a new sim each month?

I just activated my first sim, and it does ask which network I'm porting from, and obviously Optus wasn't on the list.
Does that mean if I want to keep my existing number I have to port out to another network, then port back in?

  • Port out and port in.

Thanks! Guess I'll be porting in and out for the next 5 months

  • More specifically, port out to a provider that DOES NOT use the Optus network, then port back in. If not, be prepared to wait a few hours to days to get a working phone line.

    • Shit.
I'm currently porting in from Amaysim prepaid, and my current plan's renewal date is tomorrow (4th).
Does that mean I have to renew my Amaysim plan in order to keep my number until the porting is complete?

      • What it means is, there will be a period between when AMAYSIM disconnects your line till when OPTUS connects your line. So, you may not be contactable for a few hours. (Note: may not happen, depends on your luck.)

Does that mean I have to renew my Amaysim plan in order to keep my number until the porting is complete?

No. You don't have to renew it. The moment you start the "porting" process, your Amaysim line will get disconnected and your OPTUS sim card will work. However, the phone number for the OPTUS line is the one printed on the SIM pack until OPTUS completes the porting process, which could take some time (depends on luck).

        • Ok so what's happening is, I activated my Optus sim this morning (3rd) to port my number over. However Optus doesn't port numbers on Sundays. So the process will start at 8am tomorrow morning (4th). Currently the Optus Sim does not work.

The problem is that my Amaysim prepaid plan ends today (3rd) at midnight, and I didn't not put in a renewal payment option. So that means I can't make phone calls on my Amaysim sim tomorrow (4th).

So will my number still be up for port at 8am tomorrow? Or will it be lost at 12am tomorrow morning?

And if it is still up for the port, will I have to wait a few days before my Optus Sim starts working?

        • @talismansa: You will not lose your number. AMAYSIM will keep your number for 180+ days as of midnight tonight as the system will assume that you switched to pre-paid. Sometime between 8 and 10am, your porting will begin. Amaysim will disconnect your line, but OPTUS will not connect it till a few hours later. At least that was my experience when I ported from OPTUS to AMAY 2 years ago.

        • @bsmksg: Thanks. Much appreciated

      • I don't think so.

Your number normally won't get cancelled when your plan get expired. Normally Amaysim will send you a warning email before they they cancel your number.
