I'm thinking of applying for the Amex explorer card. Theoretically the $400 of travel credit each year should offset the annual fee but I'm wondering whether booking flights via Amex is actually good value? How about seat availablity and airline options?

The flights I booked from Europe to Aus last year where exactly the same price as the airlines would of had it. YMMV I guess. Certainly worth it to signup for just the referral bonus of 100k, make sure to use one of the Ozb ones if you don't have one already.
Amex travel prices can be competitive. U just have to do your own research.you also get travel insurance n no cc surcharges.
I'm guessing the referral bonus isn't applicable because I have an Amex velocity escape card. I'm not too concerned if the ticket prices are slightly more expensive than going directly throughout the airlines because there are quite a few other benefits from the card including travel insurance (already mentioned).
As long as the flights aren't a huge rip off.I guess I'll do some additional research. Thanks for the comments.
just have a play around on AMEX travel's website, you don't have to log in to check prices.
Last couple of times I looked, AMEX's price was within a few dollars compare to booking direct with the airline, although some people in various forums reported big price discrepancies from time to time, so it is luck of the draw I guess.
What No fee Amex cards do people recommend. I want the Amex deals and the NAB is cancelling Amex in February.
Got 1 myself. Amex travel tics are more expensive than buying from the airlines, but there are other options such as hotels and car hire. I used my travel credit for hotel and the differences is ~$30 more/night from Amex travel. IMO the travel credit is not worth for air tics but great for hotel/car hire.
