I want to make a Samsung Note 8 Duos to run the two SIMs, and a SD card simultaneously- I suspect just for childish bragging rights.
High end dual SIM phones (from Samsung?) can only simultaneously run either two SIMs, or one SIM plus a SD card. Why don't they provide a separate SD card port instead of the hybrid-tray compromise? The often professed reason- "to save space". This deliberate restriction is a sham(e), as many low-end dual SIM phones have separate SD card slots out-of-the-box. And still shares the same device dimensions, as their single SIM counterparts.
Two years ago, along came a guy from Malaysia calling himself "NO REPLIED", who is credited with this genius hack blog. He removed the SIM chip from the Nano substrate and glued it to piggy back on a sanded-down SD card. Both then operated from the hybrid tray on a Samsung S7 Edge Duos.
This hack has been successfully replicated on youtube on many dual SIM phones -one involving the Samsung Note 8 too-, sometimes attracting flak from those who maintain it won't work or that it's too risky. Those who oppose say Samsung had tweaked the Dual SIM tray on the Note 8, to fit extra tight, to dissuade this mod.
I will need proceed with care, and try this on my Note 8 Duos 256 GB. Will even be getting this Vernier Caliper to match the method used in this video to not damage the expensive 128GB card, rather than the $2-to-replace Nano SIM. The other risk exists that the SIM tray will get stuck in the Note with the modded SDcard-SIM combo in it. However, I consider this to be minimal if I can get the SDCard-SIM unit -when modded- to exactly match the measurements of a regular Nano SIM.
Before I take the plunge, seeking advise from OzBargainers who had attempted this hack. All commends welcome.
TL;DR:- Want to do the SDCard-SIM hack to use in a Samsung Note 8. Welcoming advise.
Thanks
