Nah, go on, get into it, what's the worse that can happen?
Alcohol poisoning?
Hey OP can you please delete this deal, old mate doesn't drink…
But yeah - 21 years doesn't really mean much to me. Depends on the size of the barrel and all that whisky nerd stuff. I'm not convinced by this one - seems like a bit of Aldi trickery.
…agreed. i mean when has consuming alcohol ever had negative consequences??
We call it Queensland :)
Dad?
bottle gets empty :(
…you must be fun at parties
Reviews for the 24 are not good: https://www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/glen-marnoch-24-year-o…
"Finish: Acrid saccharine turns slightly alkali, and slightly mouth-watering (not in a good way). Becomes really very off-putting at the death."
Official pompous twats review is not good, mind you they being the very same people that on-sold the item for almost double its RRP/price it was available for from ALDI.
Elitist scumbags trolling is my suspicion from the few bad reviews, as almost every review is positive.
It is rumoured the ALDI sources its inhouse whisky from Grants.
Either way, the more that 'avoid' it, the better, as it will be marked down sooner :)
hmm Grant's is a blender so maybe Aldi get's their blends from Grant's but as far as I know Grant's don't do any distilling so i don't think its likely to be their source for a single malt.
"Look for Glen Marnoch on a map and you will search in vain. There is no distillery of that name, nor an actual glen. If it existed it would stretch all the way from Speyside to Islay via the Highlands"
"Aware that building a premium image is challenging on toilet paper and bin liners alone, German discount chain Aldi branched into the world of luxury aged whisky in 2011." "Since then Glen Marnoch has become the store’s proprietary luxury malt brand that has encompassed the main whisky regions, with or without an age-statement. Rumours abound as to which distilleries have been involved, and suspects have included Dalmore, Glendronach and Glen Moray."
So Basically 'Makey Uppey' Black & Gold whiskey like a lot of Aldi's stuff. Never tasted it, no idea what it is like but if you have any interest in the where the whiskey comes from…good luck!!
Details from the Whiskeypedia
funny how people just upvote deals without knowing anything about the product and whether or not they are actually saving any money…
Typical oz b crowd these days
Here's my 2c. Glen Marnoch is an in house brand of Aldi. There's no distillery associated with the brand. This means it's a rebadged product from one of many highland distilleries.
At best, the quality is going to be the same as the comparable product from the actual distillery. There's also a chance the whisky did not meet in house requirement to bear it's name; in this case it really is no more than a 'cleanskin' of whisky sort. Age does not always equate quality.
From more than one distillery. They could also easily change year by year.
Glen Marnoch is sold as an Islay, a Highland, and a Speyside. Equivalent to a wine label being Hunter, Barossa and Yarra Valley all at once.
Avoid.
i would say so too
if this were around the $50 mark you would chance it
I guess what happened is that some random distillery has a surplus of 21 year olds (LOL!) and Aldi's bought XX,XXX litres and they would have asked them to change the taste slightly so its not obvious that it's say Glenfiddich or Glenlivet for example.
Then voila, Aldi's has a 21 y.o single malt.
Most buyers who want a 21 y.o would want to know its provenance I would assume.
If it's adulterated or from more than one distillery, can they still call it a single malt?
@Meconium:
NoAgreed.
They can, however, purchase their 21 y.o. from anywhere they feel like. We already know it is not actually sourced from a locale.
I imagine any reputable distillery would offload their casks at different aging based on their own assessment of the value.
If they felt it increased their brand value, they would insist on the distillery name being shown.
If they felt it devalued their brand, they would refuse to have their name associated with it.Some distilleries produce amazing products for a premium price and their unbranded products are someone else's bargain buys, but even the best distillery makes below par whisky now and again.
So, make your own minds up. The distillery and location are not disclosed.
Is this a bargain? Only if Aldi have sold it at a higher price recently.
You never know.. some of these discount brand "cleanskin" single malts have rated highly before. The reality is these supermarket companies are huge and can buy in very large volumes and therefore get a decent wholesale price. Obviously no Scotch distilleries (all of which tend to brand themselves as "luxury" products) want their name associated with a bargain product produced discount supermarket chain so giving it a generic name is part of the deal (just like all Aldi brand products).
At 21 years Aldi have bought a product that the distillery has invested a significant amount of time and money into, and 90 bucks is about where most distilleries price their entry level malts.. so it may well be worth a gamble.
The Glen Orrin they released previously was a 30 year. And was actually really good. I grabbed a few bottles and still have some in storage. It was $100 I recall. Based on it, I'm in with this one too.
From what I recall, that was blended. This seems to be a single malt….which may or may not be a good thing
I wouldn't spend that much on it without tasting it first.
Agree. They should give away samples. No doubt, without shortage of tasters lining up.
When do you ever get to taste a whisky (or any drink) before you buy it from a bottle shop? Seems like a null statement of opinion a lot like much of the speculation that is happening on this thread.

Dans do tasting sessions… get on their mailing list.
@AnneFagit: vintage cellars in South Melbourne opened 3 bottles of whiskey for me when I was shopping for gifts last year. I did there for about 20 minutes sampling Skyward, Sullivan's, and some Canadian port finished whiskey with the manager.
@AnneFagit: You can go to a good bar and purchase a dram of whatever expression from a well known diistillery. Or you can taste it at a friend's place. With an unknonw like this in house branded malt, there are few opportunities to get to know the product without forking out 90 bucks for it.
I understand you can go to a bar and purchase whisky. My point was that saying you wouldn't try something unless you tried it full well knowing you can't try it is a throwaway statement.
Although I did know Dan's had tasting sessions, I did not know Vintage Cellars would do such a thing.
Yep. It's a blend. And the 30 year mark only needs to be justified the maximum drop included. So could be predominantly anything. Even so, nice all the same.
Scotchy scotchy Scotch
Scotch age statements are minimum age statements, not the other way around.
Don't forget "60 days 100% satisfaction refund policy" LOL
No name age statement whisky…
Respected houses will only use barrels 5 times or less, some only twice. But there aren’t any rules saying they can’t be used many more times.
The size and style of the still will give different styles, with some distilleries discarding of far more ‘heads and tails’ for only the cleanest purest spirit. There are dozens of things that affect a quality of the whisky before it’s aged and that’s why you can’t trust a no name age statement whisky.
lagavulin 16 @ Dan's for $95. Would be my choice, its a great drop in this price range
When does this item actually go on sale? Ozbargain post states it starts today yet the attached article cites Wednesday the 13th as the day of sale. No change to the Aldi website either.
Nothing at my local Aldi today.
Deal URL updated, should be 13th Dec according to aldi website.
Only 4 bottles were made available at Broadway this morning, so they limited it to 1 per customer.
My local store (Richmond) told me to come back at 9am today, because their liquor licence starts at 9am.
I rocked up at 8:50am, and "we only had 5, and it's sold out".
That's some bs, man.
South Melbourne said they didn't get any.
Not sure what is going on.
Did anyone actually get a bottle?
FWIW, I also checked Franklin st in the CBD, and the guy who was stacking the liquor section said that they must have sold them a few days ago, because he hadn't seen any today…whether they indeed sold them early, or just never got any in, I am not sure (or perhaps he was just a pleb that didn't know what was going on!).
They weren't even put on the liquor shelves at Broadway. You had to ask the cashier for it.
No-one got a bottle?
Save your money guys!
I bought a bottle yesterday and tried some, but honestly can't recommend it. I was expecting it to be a lot smoother, but whilst the nose was quite promising, there was no complexity to it and it left a harsh aftertaste in the mouth. I tried it neat and with a few drops of water, but that didn't really open up the flavours to make it any more enjoyable.
I'll be returning the bottle under the Aldi satisfaction guarantee and will be going to Dans to buy myself a bottle of the 10yo Hellyers Road, currently on special for $84.90. For less money at least I'll be enjoying every drop of this liquid gold!
Thanks for that…makes the ardbeg Uigeadail at 1st choice for 112 plus amex 20 cashback much more appealing
You're welcome! The Uigeadail is at another level altogether. Enjoy!!!
