Brand New Tiguan R Line or Second Hand Luxury SUV

Hey all

Was originally keen to get a brand new top spec Tiguan R line. Then started to see the second hand prices of numerous "luxury" car brands drop considerably due to new models being released. The luxury brands are generally the base or mid models. With the reduced pricing it all works out around how much a brand new Tiguan specced out would be anyway.

Just wanting to get your thoughts as to which car you would go for and why. All the second hand models are between 12-18 months old with less than 20,000km on the clock.

  1. 162TSI Tiguan R line
  2. BMW X3
  3. Volvo XC60
  4. Lexus NX200t

Keen to hear your thoughts. I am still leaning towards the Tiguan cos of full warranty, lots of new tech and features and less judgement from others than if driving a luxury brand.

If you really want opinions I'd advise you posting the prices of what you're looking at.
I doubt people will go out and research the prices of 5 different cars to answer your question.

    This is silly

less judgement from others than if driving a luxury brand

    Do what makes you happy

As stated in the original post the pricing works out to be around the same for all the vehicles. around 55K

My vote is the Tiguan purely because of the new tech/warranty etc.

Whichever one you get, might be worth looking into a longer warranty…

  • Lexus NX200t

  • tiguan has an enormous waiting list at the moment.

  • Porsche Cayenne

    • much more expensive

      • Tesla Type X

  • Discovery Sport?

  • Lada Niva

  • Tiguan is a nice car. I would do it.

If you want less judgement from others than if driving a luxury brand - then great way to go. As from a features perspective, tiguan will be better than those 2nd hand cars. We have a 2015 Q5 that now looks dated on the inside compared to a 2017 Tiguan R line interior.

Most people are opposite and like how they feel when they have a luxury brand. I know when you drive around in the Q5, it still get's the occasional, wow, you drive an audi comment. Where as the VW wouldn't. Now if that's exactly what you want (to go under the radar), then I'd highly recommend the tig.

  • I'd recommend the brand new Tiguan. Reason: You don't know the complete history of the used car (accidents, repairs, etc).

And as you said, it has the latest tech, which are convenient. I'd say go where your heart/satisfaction takes you (brand new Tiguan).

  • I would say it depends on the situation. Personally I'd narrow it down to the Lexus and the Tiguan. I'd get the Tiguan if I knew I'd be upgrading to another vehicle in 5 years or less purely from a historic reliability standpoint. If I knew I'd be keeping the car long term (say 5+ years) I'd go for the Lexus. Resale is expected to be good since second hand values of RX models are quite good (as are most Toyotas) and servicing will be cheaper long term as well as a better reliability outlook for the future. NX models can also be had close to new for the same price as the Tiguan, with some NX300h models being in your price range. Obviously you know the Tiguan R line will be close to 60k new, but here are some Lexuses (Lexii?) that are not even a year old within that same price bracket, just something to think about.
