Hi all,
So recently the clutch in my old 2002 Forester seized up. The throwout bearing had been whining for a couple of weeks so we knew it could go at any time. Apart from the clutch not working, the rest of the car is fine - even has newish tyres (not much older than 6mths), new battery, etc, and registered until May next year.
I sent an enquiry to a local wreckers but they only offered $100 for it, which I knocked back.
I'm thinking it's worth more than that, but I don't have a lot of knowledge on the subject. I believe however that if I de-register the vehicle I get the remainder of it reimbursed, which would presumably be somewhere around $300ish. That, plus the tyres, battery, engine and other parts of the car lead me to believe I could scrap it for more.
I thought about selling it on Gumtree but not sure if I would need to get a safety certificate to sell it, as I know you need to get a safety inspection done to sell used cars but I don't know what the rules are for cars you can't actually drive!
What do you lot think would be the best way to go about getting rid of the old warhorse while making the most $$ out of it?
Cheers in advance and happy Friday!
I'm in a similar position.
You can certainly sell a car without registration (and therefore without RWC) on Gumtree. Take the plates back to VicRoads (or whatever) and get the registration refund. Same with any insurance you may have.
There are a few wreckers that offer to buy them; perhaps contact them all and get their quotes. Some offer same day collection, payment in cash, etc., which might be attractive if you need to get rid of it.
Otherwise you could use those quotes as the basis for your sell price on Gumtree, but finding a buyer might take days / weeks?
