Roadworthy Certificate (VIC) - Where to Get Them and Who to Avoid

Hi all looking at selling my car with a RWC, I haven't done this before and was after some advice on the process.

Notice (from the VicRoad website) there a wide range of mechanics and car yards which offer roadworthy certs. Are there any places I should avoid getting done?

you either pass or you don't

some may go lenient , some wants you to get him fix something up so he can earn more.

try the mobile ones, better luck.

Just find a conveniently located garage / mechanic that has a sign offering RWCs; most do it I think. When you book in, make sure that you state you need a RWC.
My experience is that the garage will (almost always) find something that needs to be fixed; hopefully it is only minor and they can do it (for a cost) and then issue the RWC after those works.

The RWC has an expiry, so timing is everything.

    • thats dodgy

      • Or they are conscientious

      • It's not hard to find something that's needs fixing for roadworthiness.
Ask the police, they do this for a living(defects) ;)

  • Write up an ownership transfer statement. Your name, car make, model, rego, VIN, your address, license number etc.
Also include the buyer name, address, license number etc.
State the date and time and sign by both parties.
End it stating (new owner) accepts and agrees all responsibilities and lialablities relating to this vechile from (date and time).
Both parties have there own copy for reference.

This will protect you from any traffic offences they commits while the car is still under your name pending transfer of ownership.
I highly recommend you remember when the rego expires and keep this until you do not receive the rego renewal letter (yes keep it for a year if you have too). Also keep your road authority transfer paperwork too in an event you need to refer back to it.

This has saved me from going to jail cause some idiot didn't transfer ownership 8 months after buying it off me and hooning the car only to stack it into construction worksite. Police traced the car back to me and I handed them over all paperwork of the sale. They told me of the charges involved and I'm pretty sure he didn't have insurance either while car was still under my name.

Good luck with sale and hope it goes smoothly

    • thanks for that, that quite scary to hear.
i am not getting much interest in my car so iam looking at maybe getting a RWC done to help sell the car quicker.

I would advise against getting rwc before securing a potential buyer.
If your in vic, rwc are only valid for 30days.
Just state in your ad that rwc will be supplied with sale.
Best time to get rwc is when the potential buyer puts down a deposit ($500-1000 depending on car value) and use that money towards it.
Will need to write up a car deposit transaction statement similar to above name, address, license number, car, VIN, rego, deposit amount, remaining amount, date and time etc.
Also the potential buyer details. Best to also write that deposit will be non-refundable so you don't go out of your way to get RWC only for them to change their mind ending with you out of pocket. Make sure they read and understand the statement then both agree, sign and date. Both parties keep a copy.
