does apple block non MFI cables?

Not every single one, so some people successfully try their luck, but after every update you risk having your cables not work with the error message you've experienced. Blitzwolf and Anker are both good brands if you need new ones.

Yes, both make very good MFI cables and from my experience better quality than Apple's (and cheaper!), occasionally reduced on ozbargain or still quite cheap on eBay regularly. I've heard that Amazon Basics cables are also good but can't vouch for them personally.
I personally wouldn't bother with lightning cables that aren't MFI, but to each their own.
