Airport Auctions - Buyer Beware

Many would have seen shows in the USA (i have seen 1 episode) where airports auction off unclaimed items, especially luggage and contents where someone bids on a bag for example and if wins gets the bag and contents.. catch is that no one knows what the contents are, and in many cases there is a treasure trove of goodies to be found when bags are opened (of course not always).

Brisbane Airport recently used Pickles auctions to put some of their lost property under the online hammer.

Many item lots were obvious what you were getting, however along comes the fun suitcases/bags and contents up for grabs.

Not sure if this was going to be anywhere similar to the ones we see in the USA, however my interest was peaked…
last weekend they had a viewing of the items.. i thought I would make a call to pickles.

I was asking if we were able to see the contents of the bags on that day, i was advised "no, the contents remain hidden behind the zipped up bags, they also mentioned that electronics will not be turned on and some other things"
Ok so i am bidding blindly, still sounds fun, and knowing my bids are along side other blind bidder (not knowing contents) i gave it a whirl and won 4 of the suitcases.

I go in and pick them up, noticing that 2 of mine, along with 2 others that I did not win, were unzipped with 1/2 the contents spewing out the side .. all outer pockets unzipped .. so it seems that they did allow people to view contents on that day (and on top of that were too lazy to zip the bags back up with their contents) i know this happened because pictures were taken and uploaded on their site with the bags completely zipped up

I already knew from this point i was not going to get anything from these purchases, unlike the USA the locks had been removed and as above contents taken out at some point.

I go home and open the packed suitcases.. it seems that prior to the airport putting these bags up for auction had taken out anything valuable .. there were handbags with nothing but 2 5 cent coins, there were other small bags with nothing inside them.. what i did find though was a shoot load of clothing, mainly womens and kids.. not even a phone charger, although 2 phone holders/cases were found within 1 of the bags.
Guessing the laptops and jewellery and phones etc on auction separately were once a part of the contents that were being sold as bag and content auctions. (ps. I sure hope pickles did none of this, but am not going to accuse them)

I have learned an expensive lesson here, and so be it.. not one to get all upset about it.
However thought i would share my experience with fellow OB's so you do not fall for these airport auctions as i just did.
I do feel scammed as i believe things were removed prior to them being auctioned, and due to the contents being taken out for viewing although i was told with no doubt this will not be done.
And feel that the airports should have done what i am going to do, and that is drop it all to a goodwill (or alike) store for them to sell.

i do feel happy for those I outbid though, as I have saved them a good amount of cash that could be used for other things (including buying all the contents and the suitcases separately and still have change lol).. your welcome.

1 of the bags that i got outbid on was stuffed with clothing (1/2 its contents out to see) and went for $320.. another which was still in tact went for over $500 .. dang i feel for those bidders.

hope this helps OB's to avoid such auctions in the future.

I don't keep anything valuable in my travel pack, because I don't trust anybody in the chain of baggage handling. I had a friend who went to South America and not only did the baggage handlers steal all her jewellery they also tried on some of the clothing as some of it has been turned inside out. That creeped me out.

I keep all my electronics and chargers with me; because I will need them at the other end.

If you got my pack at auction you would've got exactly what you did receive, a whole bunch of clothes, much of which would be in need of a good wash, my toiletries, and shoes.

What I have started doing is putting a card with my name and phone number in my handbag so people have the chance to return things to me. I have separate ones in my glasses cases.

    1. Make random bid at auction
    2. Win bag
    3. Open bag
    4. Find two bricks of cocaine

If youre getting scammed at airports buying bottles of water for $5 and 30c ice cream cones for 70c, of course youre going to get scammed in a luggage lottery.

thanks for the heads up and story of your experience.

  • Interesting read. Thanks.
I wonder if border security / quarantine opened the bags for inspection, as they could have contained anything? But surely that would have been included in the auction notice.
Are the suitcases themselves worth keeping / selling?

1 suitcase is bin quality, a large duffel bag is in good condition, 2 suitcases the same, however i travel a lot and have too many suitcases already .. as for selling, too much effort haha .. easy enough to let the red cross (or similar) do that with money going to a good cause .. my money is down the drain, not worried about recouping it even though it was not a small amount.
I thought of customs opening them (at least scanning them) prior to bidding .. was not counting on items being removed with only clothes left (would have been nice if they said that on the listings)

some of the clothes and handbags etc are nice, certainly not worth what i paid in total, however something I know someone else will appreciate down the line via the goodwill approach.
I am looking at places like rizeup (i am not sure if they take clothing or if they have a brisbane office) but think a single mom with kids doing it tough would appreciate at least some of what i have, and would love to give it to them to sort through

When I travel with checked in luggage it’s only clothing/ half my toiletries, maybe an odd souvenir (os travel). Bag has ID card duck taped internally right at the zipper and id tag external incase something happens to the airports plastic barcode. Anything remotely interesting is in carry on.

I would love to visit one of these in Sydney just to see what’s inside!!

The pawn stars series (unpaid storage auction) is interesting to watch for all the random things not seen in everyday life. Working cannon in your lock up…

I feel sorry that your out of pocket but appreciate the post

heck.. even a bar of soap would have been a treat haha .. i should have picked up on it (thinking after the fact) they were auctioning laptops, toiletries, gold lots (mainly rings), watches lots phone lots and even perfume and so on .. these items generally would not be found solo .. they would have had to been in bags, cases etc .. that is why this does not upset me, because i based my bidding on what i have seen happen in the USA, not with what is right in front of me.

      • Glad to see a post where the op isn’t in bad spirits :-)

Silver lining - apparently this auction in held each year and proceeds are donated to charity

Items are also left at the security screening area

Yeah i knew the proceeds went to charity which is a great thing

Is it possible that the authorities have already taken the best bags?

    • +5

      I don't think that's a "possibility" - I think it's a "certainty".

  • Outrageous scam - thx for posting.

Gives me less hope for www.ibidonstorage.com.au/

My guess is that these bags are opened to find out who the owner is at the initial stage.

Who knows how many hands go through it prior to auction…

The shows you see on TV are not real, they are carefully staged and scripted to make them interesting.

    • What this guy said. Except they've gotten so fake it's almost to the point where it's become cringeworthy. Ever wonder how the camera crew is already in a great shooting location, before they've even made the find? :)

In saying that i still enjoy watching American Pickers / Pawn Stars, Although scripted, they don't put on all the soap opera garbage to go with it like Hardcore Pawn and Lizard lick towing. The reason i mention Lizard Lick towing is you have to watch this if you haven't seen it before - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3X1bc4kNLHI

PS - sucks that you didn't get a good deal.

  • No offence but this reads like I spent hundreds on lottery tickets and didn’t win so it’s a scam.

    • Wouldnt go that far. im sure you would be a little miffed if you had been in the same position assuming that the bags were untouched and not viewed. Its a little cheeky of them to cherry pick what they want and sell the rest under the guise of them being untouched(if that was in fact what they claimed).

  • You have to think about the kind of people who would leave their luggage behind and make no attempt to recover it. IE low value items.

As for the people who paid hundreds to win a bag, people get tied up in the emotion of bidding. tough luck to them, but they should have known better

  • FYI those shows (Baggage Wars and Storage Wars etc) actually place items of value into the bags for the people on the show to 'find'. The items are provided by local businesses, which is always why they know just where to go to get the items valued.

  • Thanks for your post, made good reading :)

  • Baggage handlers for the win..part of the union agreement.
