Camera Traffic Light Flash for No Reason?

So I always drive to work via Canterbury Road in Box Hill VIC. Heaps of cameras so I always take care to slow down and slow to stop when it's yellow.

Tonight as I'm driving towards the traffic light shows green so I slow down to 50km/h as I 'm approaching the intersection of Canterbury Road and Station St, Box Hill and it's still green as I cross but The bloody camera flashes in my rear view!

What happened? I can't afford a fine. Anyone got any advice please?

I just remembered that I was in the right lane going straight cross the intersection and a car on the left lane turning left at the same time as me. I didn't pay attention if there was a red left arrow at the lights but I don't think it matters cos if its green I think both lanes free to turn left and go straight through.

Why worry when you havent received the fine yet
Most likely caused by other cars

  • Was anyone speeding ? Sunlight reflection ?

Worry about it when and if you get a fine…

Sometimes it is a test flash, haven't seen it myself but have heard they do test flash on occasion.

    • Yep there's test flashes. But usually if they do, there's a dude with a RMS service car next to it.

  • It will be fine.

Well, it will be fine… or it will be a fine…

  • This should be a good reason for you to invest in a dashcam.
Save yourself the anxiety if you've done nothing wrong

    • also with large storage so u can backup everyday

I made a left turn too wide and the camera lights went off. I had a green arrow to turn left, but a red light if I was going forward. The camera would have picked up that I might have been going forward. The fine did not come.
The camera would have shown me turning left. I was the only car around as it was late at night.
I suspect the photos are looked over prior to being sent out.
I was relieved when a fine didn't come
    Lucky me.

    I think you'll be ok 😊

    • Do you have a habit of steering the opposite way before turning the way you want too turn?

      • No. Why do you ask?

        • Because I've seen many people having this habit (of taking a wide berth) even though they drive small cars and triggering the camera as a result.

If they send you a photo of your car going through a green light I doubt you'd have any problems sorting it out in court.

  • Were you close to a right turning lane with a red? That can sometimes trigger it. Once they review the photo they'll see you were in the correct lane. Don't stress.

    You worry too much.

You’re doomed. Hand in your licence and torch your car now before asio come after you.

  • This has happened to me a couple of times at an intersection in metro Adelaide where I drove through the intersection, under the speed limit as I'm unfortunately a little bit OCD about it, and there was a flash, whether or not it was from the camera at the intersection of someone flashing their lights I'm not sure but definitely a flash. Neither times received any correspondence or any fines. This was also in the days before the red light cameras also functioned on speed too.

My guess is that sometimes either there is a hiccup in the technology or someone else triggered the camera. Importantly and I know it's cliche and basic, but still it holds true, as long as you don't speed or run reds it's not going to be a problem.

  • I was at same intersection the other week. As I approach the lights they turn from green to yellow to red. I slow down and stop before the line. The car beside me in the right lane stops, but slams on the breaks and may have gone over the line as they were definitely ahead of me when stopped. Then there is the right turn lane that I couldn't see the front car, as the car beside me is blocking my view.

I saw two flashes light up the night sky. There was a car behind me at the lights, so even if was me that car behind me would have blocked the camera from seeing my license plate. Not sure who tripped the camera, right lane or right turn lane. 95% sure it wasn't me as I slowed down and stopped at red light. I think they only take your photo if you speed through intersection and/or run the red. Still when those camera flashes go off you worry until after some time passes and nothing arrives in the mail.
